RES. 914</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20220208">February 8, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="T000467">Mr. Thompson of Pennsylvania</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="B000490">Mr. Bishop of Georgia</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HGO00">Committee on Oversight and Reform</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Supporting the designation of a <quote>Boy Scouts of America Day</quote> in celebration of its 112th anniversary.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated by Chicago publisher, William Boyce, on February 8, 1910, after learning of the Scouting movement during a visit to London;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on June 21, 1910, a group of 34 national representatives met, developed organization plans, and opened a temporary national headquarters in New York;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the purpose of the Boy Scouts of America is to teach America’s youth self-reliance, character, ethical decisionmaking, and civic leadership through adherence to the Scout oath and law;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, by 1912, Scouts were enrolled in every State;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the first Eagle Scout Award was earned in 1912, and 2,700,000 youth have earned the Eagle Scout Award since;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1916, Congress granted the Boy Scouts of America a Federal charter;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 2022, there are 18,000,000 current alumni of the Scouting program within the United States, and more than 1,000,000 youth are currently enrolled across the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas each individual scout, unit, and local council commits to performing community service yearly, totaling more than 30,000,000 community service hours in recent years;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 2022 is the 110th anniversary of the first Eagle Scout Award, and more than 2,000 young women earned the award in the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts in 2021;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas more than 750,000 adult volunteer leaders selflessly serve young people in their communities through religious, civic, and other organizations chartered by the Boy Scouts of America;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the men and women involved in Scouting often neither seek nor receive the thanks of the public for their contribution to the future of our country;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas February 8, 2022, would be an appropriate day to designate as <quote>Boy Scouts of America Day</quote> in celebration of the 112th anniversary of the incorporation of the Boy Scouts of America; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Boy Scouts of America endeavors to develop American citizens who are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit, have a high degree of self-reliance as evidenced in such qualities as initiative, courage, and resourcefulness, have personal values based on religious and spiritual concepts, have the desire and skills to help others, understand the principles of the American social, economic, and governmental systems, take pride in their American heritage and understand our Nation’s role in the world, have a keen respect for the basic rights of all people, and are prepared to participate in and give leadership to American society: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="OLC" id="HB997C719D31941CE98969AF8ED18DFD2"><section id="HB55CF0984C764E928098451D6713D57F" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives supports the designation of a <quote>Boy Scouts of America Day</quote> in celebration of the 112th anniversary of the incorporation of the Boy Scouts of America. </text></section></resolution-body></resolution>
