RES. 894</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20220201">February 1, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="A000370">Ms. Adams</sponsor> (for herself, <cosponsor name-id="B001251">Mr. Butterfield</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="M001135">Ms. Manning</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HED00">Committee on Education and Labor</committee-name>, and in addition to the Committee on <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">the Judiciary</committee-name>, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Recognizing the significance of the Greensboro Four sit-in.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas February 1, 2022, is the 62d anniversary of the Greensboro Four sit-in;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Joseph McNeil, Jibreel Khazan (formerly Ezell Blair, Jr.), Franklin McCain, and David Richmond are the members of the Greensboro Four;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Greensboro Four attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Greensboro Four were refused service at the F.W. Woolworth cafeteria in Greensboro, North Carolina, on February 1, 1960;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Greensboro Four ignited a movement to challenge racial inequality throughout the South;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Greensboro Four were joined by female students from Bennett College and Greensboro Women’s College;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the sit-ins spread nationwide with over 700,000 people participating, including students, clergymen, and citizens, both White and Black;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the protests resulted in more than 3,000 arrests;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Greensboro Four remained peaceful throughout the 6-month sit-in; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Woolworth Lunch Counter was integrated on July 26, 1960: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H6B3FAC373F0D4CBB9C286329434C67AA"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H824E6E4C652146509FD165BE4C8E0FB5"><enum/><text>That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="HD17ACD4B398348529EB8213A7DD38441"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">recognizes the Greensboro Four for their contribution to the civil rights movement and the significant role they played as a catalyst for the mobilization of college students in the civil rights movement coalescing in the formation of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HA86AF89C3E354864B09A8C20C7D7D3B4"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes that ethnic and racial diversity of the United States enriches and strengthens the Nation; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H93400527E12D4AFA9BF5128A4F3CC5DB"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">encourages all States to include in their educational curriculum the history and contributions of the Greensboro Four.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
