Maloney of New York</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="N000147">Ms. Norton</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="J000305">Ms. Jacobs of California</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="W000800">Mr. Welch</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="T000481">Ms. Tlaib</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001068">Mr. Cohen</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="W000822">Mrs. Watson Coleman</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="N000179">Mrs. Napolitano</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000562">Mr. Lynch</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001110">Mr. Correa</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="T000483">Mr. Trone</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="A000148">Mr. Auchincloss</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B001287">Mr. Bera</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="T000468">Ms. Titus</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="W000788">Ms. Williams of Georgia</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="E000296">Mr. Evans</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="K000389">Mr. Khanna</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HFA00">Committee on Foreign Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Recognizing the 73d anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the celebration of <quote>Human Rights Day</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948, represents the first comprehensive agreement among countries as to the specific rights and freedoms of all human beings;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Universal Declaration of Human Rights upholds the basic principles of liberty and freedom enshrined in the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas awareness of human rights—</text><paragraph id="HF8F6E47FFF9949589776E410E2766E23"><enum>(1)</enum><text>is essential to the realization of fundamental freedoms;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HB4998B28D3FD477689AE20657C99F29A"><enum>(2)</enum><text>promotes equality;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H13690C96047349C7B5F401CD1FE24C79"><enum>(3)</enum><text>contributes to preventing conflict and human rights violations; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H9426959FE08649CE9080A8A40C4F4D4E"><enum>(4)</enum><text>enhances participation in democratic processes;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Congress has a proud history of promoting human rights that are internationally recognized;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas it is in the national interest of the United States to observe consistent and principled human rights policies in the face of growing illiberalism and authoritarianism around the world;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States is dedicated to working with its allies and partners to confront these challenges and to bolster respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms as described in the Universal Declaration; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas December 10 of each year is celebrated around the world as <quote>Human Rights Day</quote>: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H2FDA19698B1348C3AF4CBB1EF8F53E34"><section id="H1B03C1E0813B4A8FAE4337E0DEE32429" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H868720168A144939B71574592C0DC6D1"><enum>(1)</enum><text>expresses support for the designation of <quote>Human Rights Day</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HD76474765B6B4A7CBD2FAF54E23B2AF3"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the 73d anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HAB863BBAFDBC4B9CAEE3727E37883412"><enum>(3)</enum><text>reaffirms the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H053A6B5FFE79483390D05F04547D27E7"><enum>(4)</enum><text>supports the right of human rights defenders all over the world to promote the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H2B1A56CF384043E7B7C40ED69B74C9CF"><enum>(5)</enum><text>encourages the people of the United States—</text><subparagraph id="H77D977CF66C141D5800ED84B127D7565"><enum>(A)</enum><text>to observe <quote>Human Rights Day</quote>; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H14A24D11CEBC4BACAC1040DBE8C09EC3"><enum>(B)</enum><text>to continue a commitment to upholding freedom, democracy, and human rights around the globe.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
