which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the designation of November 9, 2021, as <quote>National Microtia and Atresia Awareness Day</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas microtia is a congenital anomaly, affecting the outer ear, where the ear does not fully develop during the first trimester of pregnancy;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas microtia is often accompanied by aural atresia, which is the absence or closure of the external auditory ear canal resulting in hearing loss;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas it is estimated that there are 750,000 people worldwide with microtia;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas microtia is diagnosed at birth, affecting one ear or both ears, but there is no understanding as to why microtia occurs;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas aural atresia is usually diagnosed at birth, affecting one ear or both ears, but in some cases may not be recognized until later in life;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas doctors and nurses may be informed of microtia and aural atresia, in certain settings, the conditions are rare enough that misinformation or lack of information on options and services, quickly evaporates any remaining sense of celebration that accompanies a birth; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas living with facial challenges such as craniofacial microsomia and hearing loss, as well as the longing for social acceptance, are some of the daily concerns for individuals who are born with microtia or aural atresia: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HF168A86B0A964267849C6CA8DAB658D8"><section id="HAEFF512A480E417BBB221A305B1754A1" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H7D0524B2C30C43A7A77348ED042AB97E"><enum>(1)</enum><text>expresses support for the designation of <quote>National Microtia and Atresia Awareness Day</quote>; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="HCBAA199D7FE4459BB5CD8A873FFD067B"><enum>(2)</enum><text>encourages each person of the United States—</text><subparagraph id="HCCB11F67765A4DCDAE67207BF715DAD5"><enum>(A)</enum><text>to celebrate the community that is made up of not only children and adults with microtia or aural atresia, but families, teachers, advocates, and medical professionals from around the world who foster awareness and assistance; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H9C12C2D80C1A4498B1785FC399343EBD"><enum>(B)</enum><text>to help promote public awareness of microtia, aural atresia, and the hope that future generations of families will leave the hospital equipped with more answers than questions, along with their dreams for their child intact;</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="H934FD97A72F74DF58E16A77E3AF29761"><enum>(3)</enum><text>supports efforts to remove unnecessary barriers and replace them with resources and tools that aim to eliminate bullying and clear the way for an even more successful future for those with microtia or atresia;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HEB726F8D721946B5894ACE8F28E680C4"><enum>(4)</enum><text>encourages Federal, State, and local policymakers to work together—</text><subparagraph id="H995A9450D87D446999C8E86129501313"><enum>(A)</enum><text>to raise awareness about microtia and aural atresia; </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H6F2A192D116C4994A20D78D62E49AAE7"><enum>(B)</enum><text>to improve proper diagnosis of microtia and aural atresia; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC835C61E6C0D444F8A50106E624F298A"><enum>(C)</enum><text>to support advancements in technology that improve the lives of those with microtia and aural atresia; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="HCCCB37EEF36C478F8BAED89AE12FBEF0"><enum>(5)</enum><text>encourages the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate awareness and educational activities.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
