RES. 747</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20211026">October 26, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="G000597">Mr. Garbarino</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S001201">Mr. Suozzi</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Supporting the designation of October 2021 as <quote>Down Syndrome Awareness Month</quote> and supporting the goals and ideals of <quote>Down Syndrome Awareness Month</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition, happening when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas approximately 1 in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, or around 6,000 births per year;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Down syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has increased dramatically in recent decades, from 25 years of age in 1983, to 60 years of age in 2021;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas people with Down syndrome attend school and work, participate in decisions that affect them, have meaningful relationships, vote, and contribute to society in many exceptional ways; </text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas recent studies have shown that employees with disabilities frequently match the work of their colleagues without disabilities; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas high-quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care, and positive support from family, friends, and the community enable people with Down syndrome to lead fulfilling and productive lives: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H55D7DBCDB8044457A38171A0AAA3FB15"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H92976F09CDC14916818A4A0BCFA44A70"><enum/><text>That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="HFFC78E9CEECA48BFB30BEA52C0FAD171"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the designation of <quote>Down Syndrome Awareness Month</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H2D5F589130BF47AEA259D046539E7305"><enum>(2)</enum><text>supports the goals and ideals of <quote>Down Syndrome Awareness Month</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HBD384B1D27DC4E9EA782AA3FF4C4FAC1"><enum>(3)</enum><text>encourages awareness and education regarding Down syndrome; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H56A765E54B0E4A0AA95768D8F5F994AE"><enum>(4)</enum><text>is committed to advancing the lives of people with Down syndrome, including the integration of people with Down syndrome within the workforce.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
