RES. 718</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20211012">October 12, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="J000288">Mr. Johnson of Georgia</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="E000297">Mr. Espaillat</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000551">Ms. Lee of California</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="P000604">Mr. Payne</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="N000147">Ms. Norton</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B000490">Mr. Bishop of Georgia</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="J000032">Ms. Jackson Lee</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001068">Mr. Cohen</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001185">Ms. Sewell</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B001303">Ms. Blunt Rochester</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001160">Ms. Moore of Wisconsin</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001061">Mr. Cleaver</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B001270">Ms. Bass</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="G000551">Mr. Grijalva</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000592">Mr. Levin of Michigan</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001067">Ms. Clarke of New York</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001157">Mr. David Scott of Georgia</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="R000606">Mr. Raskin</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the designation of October 17, 2021, as <quote>National Vitiligo Awareness Day</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas vitiligo is a long-term, chronic disorder that results in the loss of pigment in patches on the skin, hair, eyes, and inside of the mouth;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the condition can result in discomfort, itching, and pain, but there is still no known cure;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the American Academy of Dermatology refers to vitiligo as a life-altering disorder that can cause low self-esteem, anger, and depression;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, about half of the individuals diagnosed with vitiligo are diagnosed before the age of 21;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a study by Pediatric Dermatology found that about half of all children and adolescents diagnosed with vitiligo experienced a decreased quality of life, and some individuals even experienced problems with schoolwork, increased bullying and teasing, trouble with developing friendships, and self-confidence issues;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a Yale study found that bullied children are two to nine times more likely to consider suicide, and the CDC reports suicide is the second leading cause of death among people between the ages of 10 and 34; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Judith Porter, Ph.D., and Ann Beuf, Ph.D., found that social support for children and adolescents with vitiligo provided by families, peers, charities, support groups, and teachers can greatly improve their quality of life and decrease stress related to bullying: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H782BD03F3A6E4801A76E5BAA042BBA2E"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H0B01BB37AE8E4FD98F180AF3F06E97D9"><enum/><text>That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="HF8B59B8AF5264361A13386F516FBE632"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the designation of <quote>National Vitiligo Awareness Day</quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H9EC820C9C72A43389A82825D4D43D4FD"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the importance of providing support for individuals diagnosed with vitiligo to improve their quality of life.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
