Maloney of New York</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001078">Mr. Connolly</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000562">Mr. Lynch</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="A000370">Ms. Adams</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001204">Mr. San Nicolas</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="D000617">Ms. DelBene</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001084">Mr. Cicilline</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="L000559">Mr. Langevin</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HGO00">Committee on Oversight and Reform</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United States Postal Service and recognizing their service to the United States of America.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin to be the first Postmaster General in 1775;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Postal Service is explicitly mentioned in the Constitution of the United States of America;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Postal Service is entirely self-sufficient, receiving no tax dollars for operating expenses; </text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States Post Office Department was created by the Postal Service Act in 1792;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Post Office Department was officially recognized as a Cabinet Department between 1872 and 1971;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States Post Office Department was reorganized into the United States Postal Service by the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States Postal Service first began operations on July 1, 1971;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas President Richard Nixon proclaimed July 1, 1971, as <quote>National Postal Service Day</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, for more than two centuries, the Postal Service has delivered parcels across the country;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Postal Service processes nearly 430,000,000 pieces of mail each day and handles 43 percent of the world’s mail volume;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Postal Service serves over 161,000,000 addresses in the United States, covering every State, city, and town;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Postal Service operates over 34,000 retail locations around the country;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Postal Service employs more than 600,000 dedicated workers, including 73,000 veterans;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Postal Service routinely has one of the highest approval ratings of any agency or entity in the Federal Government; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the dedicated employees of the Postal Service exemplified their service to this country during the COVID–19 pandemic, serving as a critical lifeline for Americans: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="OLC" id="H7E73692F12F345E78DF0956EC1665AB4"><section id="H8B21BE8841D7422AB3E2646E314AEE6E" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This resolution may be cited as the <quote><short-title>United States Postal Service 50th Anniversary Resolution</short-title></quote> or the <quote><short-title>USPS 50th Anniversary Resolution</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H2F734A6DA6FA498A8C4A0A84B4797F30"><enum>2.</enum><header>USPS 50th Anniversary</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="HC2951C8CD0A546FCB906404E4249B169"><enum>(1)</enum><text>recognizes the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United States Postal Service;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H93FBE4BF35004A77BE1B3B23B473A90A"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the United States Postal Service for the critical role it plays in connecting Americans across the country and around the globe; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H4DE99890C3E44B4195AC8514D7B93A1A"><enum>(3)</enum><text>applauds the employees of the United States Postal Service for their dedication and service to the country.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
