RES. 239</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210316">March 16, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="O000172">Ms. Ocasio-Cortez</sponsor> (for herself, <cosponsor name-id="T000481">Ms. Tlaib</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="G000585">Mr. Gomez</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="M001137">Mr. Meeks</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HFA00">Committee on Foreign Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the region of Bengal in South Asia is home to an ancient civilization with a rich cultural and literary tradition;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the 1947 partition of India created an East Bengal province, which became part of Pakistan, and in 1954, as part of the One-Unit program, East Bengal became East Pakistan;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in December 1970, Pakistan held its first election, and despite East Pakistan winning a majority of seats in Parliament, the West Pakistan-based military leadership refused to cede power to the majority and instead imposed martial law in East Pakistan;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on March 26, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence from West Pakistan;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in December 1971, following a nine-month long war that resulted in millions of displaced people and deaths, the Pakistani Army surrendered to Indian and Bangladeshi allied forces; </text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on February 14, 1972, the late Senator Edward Kennedy at a speech at Dhaka University said, <quote>The struggle of the people of Bangladesh . . . evokes the greatest memories of our past</quote> and exemplifies a shared love of freedom with the American people; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in August 2017, citing parallels between the displacement of Bengalis during the 1971 war, the Government of Bangladesh accepted more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees fleeing genocide in Burma: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H3D9787A00AD0415EB93424466D55D45F"><section id="H636CDC44F9EA4E8CB584013BCF9068E2" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H46F08884A8354856A47BC8DA1F33AEB3"><enum>(1)</enum><text>recognizes the people of Bangladesh on the 50th anniversary of their independence;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HDE16B279963E4288B50643C960070A9C"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the historical significance of this milestone to those of Bangladeshi heritage;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H53AB8D1F40534CD0AEA3B0029BA55FA5"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">recognizes the courage of freedom fighters in the struggle for independence and democracy;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HD780912B09264D3E83309A6145B94C9B"><enum>(4)</enum><text>expresses support for the principles of democratic governance to which the people of Bangladesh are committed; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H3FB819D5F6004E69B0F69452DF5DD50F"><enum>(5)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">recognizes the contributions of Bangladesh for hosting Rohingya refugees fleeing genocide in Burma. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
