RES. 187</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210303">March 3, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="T000460">Mr. Thompson of California</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="M001180">Mr. McKinley</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the goals and ideals of <quote>World Hearing Day</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated March 3 as World Hearing Day;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the theme for World Hearing Day 2021 is <quote>Hearing Care for All</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas World Hearing Day 2021 marks the launch of the first WHO World Report on Hearing, which presents a global call for action to address hearing loss and ear diseases across the life course;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas approximately 466 million people worldwide, including 34 million children, have disabling hearing loss;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the WHO estimates that by 2050 over 900 million people—1 in every 10—will have disabling hearing loss;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas approximately 48 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss and people with hearing impairments wait on average 7 years before seeking help;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas hearing issues are the most common service-connected disability among American veterans;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the number of adults in the United States 20 years or older with hearing loss is expected to increase from 44.1 million in 2020 to 73.5 million by 2060;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas individuals with mild hearing loss are 3 times more likely to experience a fall, and falls are the leading cause of fatal injury for Americans over 65;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas seniors with hearing loss are more likely to develop cognitive problems and experience cognitive decline up to 40 percent faster than those without hearing loss;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas untreated hearing loss can lead to depression, anxiety, and social isolation, especially during the co­ro­na­vi­rus (COVID–19) pandemic;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas uneven coverage of and access to hearing technology and services contribute to significant disparities in hearing care; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas timely access to diagnosis and treatment for hearing and vestibular conditions by qualified hearing health care professionals can improve outcomes and reduce overall cost of care: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HB5896B64DA224C1C83A6117609B3F42B"><section id="H97725DD2101E4AF2B74D9D0CE2DF5B3E" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H4C5362E4E4E24713AA584F211D6AD4E8"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the goals and ideals of <quote>World Hearing Day</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H78660D3D8DCC4CEE97F6EEC8FA91E4AC"><enum>(2)</enum><text>encourages awareness about ways to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H79510295EC8348A9B12F48695B22BC43"><enum>(3)</enum><text>supports efforts to improve access to hearing health care and technology for all individuals.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
