R. 961</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210211">February 11, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S001205">Ms. Scanlon</sponsor> (for herself and <cosponsor name-id="A000377">Mr. Armstrong</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To exempt juveniles from the requirements for suits by prisoners, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H797AA540D3E74E63BCB40EF1B945687F" style="OLC"><section id="H0948FD1893E84945BD9CDA988206186D" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Justice for Juveniles Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H61AAEE45B4B649908114956D560E1E0D"><enum>2.</enum><header>Exemption of juveniles from the requirements for suits by prisoners</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 7 of the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/1997e">42 U.S.C. 1997e</external-xref>) is amended—</text><paragraph id="H404D0D46F68C4720AE0DD3FC0339F78A"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in subsection (h), by striking <quote>sentenced for, or adjudicated delinquent for,</quote> and inserting <quote>or sentenced for</quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H41A2FCD0B6AB4FB4A9F125811E1FD389"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H7E21DEF52BDC480B83B190491E40C8F5" style="OLC"><subsection id="H5BCE5E7A4A9E4E6B841C9C1EA60E06DB"><enum>(i)</enum><header>Exemption of juvenile prisoners</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">This section shall not apply to an action pending on the date of enactment of the Justice for Juveniles Act or filed on or after such date if such action is—</text><paragraph id="H15EFB6AA57194837858A69524D7BCC99"><enum>(1)</enum><text>brought by a prisoner who has not attained 22 years of age; or</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H7E3C2393FA2F45D3A995F1B9308B0180"><enum>(2)</enum><text>brought by any prisoner with respect to a prison condition that occurred before the prisoner attained 22 years of age.</text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
