R. 8142</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20220617">June 17, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="B001298">Mr. Bacon</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HAS00">Committee on Armed Services</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To provide standardized identification credentials for Department of Defense law enforcement officers, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H967D508A4687438397823BEE37A6D9BF" style="OLC"><section id="HB48377AF9831463B92DD6863F1541FB7" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Department of Defense Law Enforcement Credential Act of 2022</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HB4D4BA9D30684CDD990805BCF67E6035" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Standardized credentials for law enforcement officers of the Department of Defense</header><subsection id="H89FBBE327A854E4D8159E833188ACE6A"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Standardized credentials required</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall—</text><paragraph id="H72FF2F7F810C405AB637E90147097505"><enum>(1)</enum><text>develop a standardized identification credential for Defense law enforcement officers;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H518052FA07094369B20199EAFB9BBADA"><enum>(2)</enum><text>issue such credential to each such officer at no cost to such officer; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H00740C52A40D40B590D42A2762583772"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">ensure that any Department of Defense common access card issued to such an officer clearly identifies the officer as a Defense law enforcement officer.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H851E641887384137B9F10BFB09A1B6A8"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Defense law enforcement officer defined</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In this Act, the term <quote>Defense law enforcement officer</quote> means a member of the Armed Forces or civilian employee of the Department of Defense who—</text><paragraph id="H5566533A03BC4EA689AAED1620F54108"><enum>(1)</enum><text>is authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of, or the incarceration of any person for, any violation of law;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H5F5C66DF96ED4EA7A68A84E1643F98B1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>has statutory powers of arrest or apprehension under section 807(b) of title 10, United States Code (article 7(b) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice); and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HF3514D3869CA4551A86197A607BA9CD1"><enum>(3)</enum><text>is authorized by the Department to carry a firearm.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
