<section id="HA880DBBC3A5D42FB8E4E2B478A066916" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Parents Need to Know Act of 2022</short-title></quote>. </text></section> <section id="HB9608AC84C2B4ED9A1B572FFEEB03066"><enum>2.</enum><header>Notification and reporting requirements relating to threats and emergencies faced by students in elementary and secondary public schools</header> <subsection id="HEACDD6F154DB43728E42C745620C282B"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Notification and reporting requirements</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Subsection (b) of section 1112 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/6312">20 U.S.C. 6312</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="HCF456C590BAC4423BDEC05F8832381B0"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in paragraph (12), by striking <quote>and</quote> at the end;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H7B2215A16EAC4F6CAF25C1EF0EE7C31F"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by redesignating paragraph (13) as paragraph (14); and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HFD185473D5AF4A8084DAF12C468CACCD"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by inserting before paragraph (14), as so redesignated, the following new paragraph:</text> <quoted-block style="OLC" id="HBC88BC43178942B785A2A53D7ABC2443" display-inline="no-display-inline"> <paragraph id="H7051BA5021F1453183782BB63C7F52CE"><enum>(13)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">how the local educational agency will establish procedures for schools served by the local educational agency to provide—</text> 
<subparagraph id="HD15CCB9BAAF148A18E585231971A47B2"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">timely notification to parents, in a manner that does not reveal any personally identifiable information about an individual student, about—</text> <clause id="HD6E6887EB15C4FE3BD4DF25041906302"><enum>(i)</enum><text>an unlawful act or significant emergency that occurs on school grounds, during transportation for school-sponsored events, or during school-sponsored activities; or</text></clause> 
<clause id="H0D5B10F5B6284B5F81BEE39E532084E8"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>a threat that has been made about an unlawful act or significant emergency occurring on school grounds, during transportation for school-sponsored events, or during school-sponsored activities; </text></clause></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="H50146E33AAF0458EA16FBD67702C7EF5"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">a plan to address, mitigate, or correct any risks to students associated with the unlawful act or significant emergency; and</text> </subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H2422E46897BD4B428564842538B5239D"><enum>(C)</enum><text>provide annual notice to students, parents, and any individual who works at the school describing the notification procedures established under subparagraph (A); and</text> </subparagraph> </paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> <subsection id="H6B921902A7B44047B315B632681C105D"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1112 of such Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/6312">20 U.S.C. 6312</external-xref>) is further amended by adding at the end the following:</text> 
<quoted-block style="OLC" id="HB26C2417011B4CFBBB03AD4E1B7B22E1" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<subsection id="H2743FAA989004BFE9E026A6C6ADCB430"><enum>(f)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In this section:</text> <paragraph id="H384D3B4AC1DD4AAB882DDA3F65B373DA"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Timely notification</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The term <term>timely notification</term> means, with respect to the notification procedures established under subsection (b)(13)(A), the exercise of reasonable care by a school to contact the parents or other known emergency contacts of students following the use of such notification procedures, including by telephone calls, voice mail messages, text messages, and email messages.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H4E797796F0F44EECB9FCD4A0E9FBC07C"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Unlawful act or significant emergency</header><text>The term <term>unlawful act or significant emergency</term> means one or more of the following:</text> <subparagraph id="H321640AB23124B3EBB2DCEE2B7AFF414"><enum>(A)</enum><text>Homicide or accidental death.</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H46E2C3FDD8DD43B7ACA81280F245EDF8"><enum>(B)</enum><text>Rape or sexual assault.</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="HDFC3B4B6C2EA4070AE7A7613444F4467"><enum>(C)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Aggravated assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm.</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H5D0FCC17B15643FE98175C53872451DA"><enum>(D)</enum><text>Arson.</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="HAA7830301F2448938F93754BE8F8BAA2"><enum>(E)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Any unauthorized possession or use of a firearm.</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HC4D606A861FB4B00B34D0EB13CC7636F"><enum>(F)</enum><text>A manmade or natural emergency including any hurricane, tornado, storm, high water, wind driven water, tidal wave, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, landslide, mudslide, snowstorm, or drought, or, regardless of cause, any fire, flood, explosion, gas leak, building collapse, or damage by aircraft.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection> </section> </legis-body></bill>
