<section id="H6E9ECC3C7D0447F6BA6671B51BC9EF08" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Cost of War Act of 2022</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="HFFCD9D527D3B4296A8F6615FB3513BB8"><enum>2.</enum><header>Public availability of cost of certain military operations to each United States taxpayer</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 1090 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 (<external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/114/328">Public Law 114–328</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="HA4C1B5456E0240CFAEA6AB6424DA39A6"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by inserting <quote>(a) <header-in-text level="subsection" style="OLC">Publication of information.—</header-in-text></quote> before <quote>The Secretary of Defense</quote>;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H523B0C0B13EB4FCD97C510D0E15B3DF8"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by striking <quote>of each of the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.</quote> and inserting <quote>of any overseas contingency operation conducted by the United States Armed Forces on or after September 18, 2001.</quote>; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HB3932DFB39E64DADACFAF080C0FD66D3"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by adding at the end the following new subsections:</text> <quoted-block style="OLC" id="HA86DD81E5DB946D982587F2E530F6AA9" display-inline="no-display-inline"> <subsection id="H9CB4E9A9D35F4B12AEB0193529D54965"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Display of information</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The information required to be posted under subsection (a) shall—</text> 
<paragraph id="H596BC6E01FAC4140B0931B9786B17181"><enum>(1)</enum><text>be posted directly on the website of the Department of Defense, in an accessible and clear format;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="HF78228D96D3045D4A5DA28B0E26DEDF6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>include corresponding documentation as links or attachments; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H67088D54D58543C3B0DE5E47AE90DC7F"><enum>(3)</enum><text>include, for each overseas contingency operation—</text> <subparagraph id="HA7D733851B024E4EAE3AECC2458E69CC"><enum>(A)</enum><text>both the total cost to each taxpayer, and the cost to each taxpayer for each fiscal year, of conducting the overseas contingency operation;</text></subparagraph>
<subparagraph id="H6CF390B2BADB4F4E91BB45F17E881154"><enum>(B)</enum><text>a list of countries where the overseas contingency operation has taken place; and</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="H116CC3029905449DBC8FA3DEFCFAA435"><enum>(C)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">for each such country, both the total cost to each taxpayer, and the cost to each taxpayer for each fiscal year, of conducting the overseas contingency operation in that country.</text> </subparagraph></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="HD14C85C1F84741209AFB728909D51A37"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Updates</header><text>The Secretary shall ensure that all the information required to be posted under subsection (a) is updated by not later than 90 days after the last day of each fiscal year.</text></subsection> <subsection id="H9C0D22D37970451CB31C74163E729D52"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Contingency operation defined</header><text>In this section, the term <quote>contingency operation</quote> has the meaning given such term in section 101(a)(13) of title 10, United States Code. </text></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block> </paragraph> </section>
