R. 5201</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210910">September 10, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="B001298">Mr. Bacon</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HAS00">Committee on Armed Services</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To direct the Secretary of Defense to establish and maintain a database that contains up-to-date contact information for the next of kin of members of the Armed Forces under the jurisdiction of the Secretaries of the military departments.</official-title></form><legis-body id="HD4A5F86343CB4E7D89AAF14F29ED1215" style="OLC"><section id="H3CB102FA8E7A4D50BAA9425558586B96" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Database of next of kin of deceased members of the Armed Forces</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall prescribe regulations that establish and maintain a database of the Department of Defense that contains up-to-date contact information for the next of kin of members of the Armed Forces under the jurisdiction of the Secretaries of the military departments. Such regulations shall ensure that—</text><paragraph id="HDAF0E499DD304C338658E25D6C42B791"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">a commander in a grade higher than O–5 may access the contact information for the next of kin of a member who died while a member of the unit under the command of such commander, regardless of whether such member served under such commander; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H0AD3D2D80B4041D5AB10EE5B1F6FB681"><enum>(2)</enum><text>an individual named in such database may—</text><subparagraph id="HB2E5E03B947843B4B6076A249ECC0DBC"><enum>(A)</enum><text>elect to not be contacted by an officer described in paragraph (1); and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HBB37612E8683424194A3390625EBC4A4"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">change such election at any time.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
