R. 4840</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210729">July 29, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="M001210">Mr. Murphy of North Carolina</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HFA00">Committee on Foreign Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961 to exclude the Government of the People’s Republic of China from eligible foreign governments with which Federal employees may participate in cultural exchange.</official-title></form><legis-body id="HCE400B524B5D4CE3AC5D0E1CAF90E611" style="OLC"><section id="H774F1406A6764B7DBE0AE7EFB4B72967" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>End Misleading Cultural Exchanges Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HFFD1F6F0661E45FB9D7A43B8FC31A5D9"><enum>2.</enum><header>Exclusion of Government of the People’s Republic of China from certain cultural exchanges</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Subsection (a) of section 108A of the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/22/2458a">22 U.S.C. 2458a(a)</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following new paragraph:</text><quoted-block style="traditional" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H0EE83B60425E4E09A5A99B7B2FCCE8C9"><paragraph id="H21C7FD3794DA4CF79510FA6F45A56D1D" indent="up1"><enum>(3)</enum><text>For purposes of this section, the term <term>foreign government</term> does not include the Government of the People’s Republic of China. </text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></section></legis-body></bill>
