R. 4768</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210728">July 28, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="J000295">Mr. Joyce of Ohio</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HPW00">Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure</committee-name>, and in addition to the Committee on <committee-name committee-id="HII00">Natural Resources</committee-name>, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned</action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To require the Secretary of the Army to initiate at least 5 projects to reduce the loss and degradation of Great Lakes coastal wetlands, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H3B13C79C14814556AEACF5AA6890E52F" style="OLC"><section id="HE87225C3822A4FE0A151A7771A9DD69D" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Detrimental Erosion Forcing Enhanced Needs to Defend the Great Lakes Act</short-title></quote> or the <quote><short-title>DEFEND the Great Lakes Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H30AE357FB03A43F58E009BEF7EA092B6" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Projects to protect Great Lakes coastal wetlands</header><subsection id="H1845A2AE836C40C6870B9D36FE1C6B49"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary of the Army shall initiate not less than 5 projects under section 206 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1996 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/33/2330">33 U.S.C. 2330</external-xref>).</text></subsection><subsection id="HF4C8B03832D44538966EE9646705CF43"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Project type</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Each of the projects initiated under subsection (a) shall be a project to reduce the risk of loss and degradation of coastal wetlands along the shorelines of the Great Lakes due to shoreline erosion caused by high velocity waves and high water events.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
