which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To authorize an additional district judge for the district of Puerto Rico and to convert to permanent status the temporary office of bankruptcy judge for the district of Puerto Rico.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H9B67B75691A64B49B6E8E0C8ABA946B5" style="OLC"><section id="HAE3B762FB5174F86B46BF823FFEF1D9E" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Puerto Rico Federal Judicial Improvement Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HD77D6E3A5D7646E896807080F977ED87"><enum>2.</enum><header>District judgeship for the district of Puerto Rico</header><subsection id="H06AEBC6A292B4DF3B6A888D4F5C7CCC1"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>The President shall appoint, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, 1 additional district judge for the district of Puerto Rico.</text></subsection><subsection id="H61F6F3F8FF6744FB951A2F4FE6D57795"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Technical and conforming amendment</header><text>In order that the table contained in section 133(a) of title 28, United States Code, will reflect the change in the number of judgeships authorized by subsection (a), such table is amended by striking the item relating to Puerto Rico and inserting the following:</text><table align-to-level="section" blank-lines-before="1" colsep="0" frame="none" line-rules="no-gen" rowsep="0" rule-weights="0.0.0.0.0.0" table-template-name="Generic: 1 text, 1 num" table-type=""><tgroup cols="2" grid-typeface="1.1" rowsep="0" thead-tbody-ldg-size="10.10.12"><colspec coldef="txt-no-ldr" colname="column1" colwidth="269pts" min-data-value="200"></colspec><colspec coldef="fig" colname="column2" colwidth="56pts" min-data-value="10"></colspec><tbody><row><entry colname="column1" leader-modify="force-ldr" stub-definition="txt-ldr">Puerto Rico</entry><entry colname="column2">8</entry></row></tbody></tgroup></table></subsection></section><section id="H436491F07A2E496EBB799BE02EE11EE7"><enum>3.</enum><header>Conversion of the temporary office of bankruptcy judge to the permanent office of bankruptcy judge for the district of Puerto Rico</header><subsection id="H8AED2F7342954E70B62FCBC240D263FF"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Conversion of office to permanent status</header><paragraph id="HA4840F5ACED84090B1DE82C83DA3CCE5"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The temporary office of bankruptcy judge authorized for the district of Puerto Rico by section 1223(b)(1)(P) of <external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/109/8">Public Law 109–8</external-xref> (119 Stat. 197; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/28/152">28 U.S.C. 152</external-xref> note), and extended by section 2(a)(1)(M) of <external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/112/121">Public Law 112–121</external-xref> (126 Stat. 346; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/28/152">28 U.S.C. 152</external-xref> note) and section 1002(a)(1)(G) of <external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/115/72">Public Law 115–72</external-xref> (131 Stat. 1230; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/28/152">28 U.S.C. 152</external-xref> note), is converted hereby to the permanent office of bankruptcy judge and represented in the amendment made by subsection (b).</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H49A2E70B09F34200BC3AF6276B0D3527"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The temporary office of bankruptcy judge authorized for the district of Puerto Rico by section 3(a)(7) of <external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/102/361">Public Law 102–361</external-xref> (106 Stat. 966; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/28/152">28 U.S.C. 152</external-xref> note), and extended by section 1223(c)(1) of <external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/109/8">Public Law 109–8</external-xref> (119 Stat. 198; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/28/152">28 U.S.C. 152</external-xref> note), section 2(b)(1) of <external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/112/121">Public Law 112–121</external-xref> (126 Stat. 347; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/28/152">28 U.S.C. 152</external-xref> note), and section 1002(b)(1) of <external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/115/72">Public Law 115–72</external-xref> (131 Stat. 1230; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/28/152">28 U.S.C. 152</external-xref> note), is converted hereby to the permanent office of bankruptcy judge and is represented in the amendment made by subsection (b).</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="HB2315754C8BC45F1846BE280A905C080"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Conforming amendment</header><text>To reflect the conversion of the temporary office of bankruptcy judge to the permanent office of bankruptcy judge made by the operation of subsection (a), section 152(a)(2) of title 28 of the United States Code is amended in the item relating to the district of Puerto Rico by striking <quote>2</quote> and inserting <quote>4</quote>.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
