R. 1518</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210302">March 2, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="R000597">Mr. Rice of South Carolina</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="M000194">Ms. Mace</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="G000581">Mr. Vicente Gonzalez of Texas</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="K000188">Mr. Kind</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To improve the national instant criminal background check system in order to search the National Data Exchange database when conducting criminal background checks.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H033EABD309EE4B51B91E856C0BB1A1B8" style="OLC"><section id="HF1F1CA4DB8F947D68B69A5344B0FF8AE" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>21st Century NICS Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HA165FF0A2C384102B1CB66159CDE6A31"><enum>2.</enum><header>Requirement that the NICS system search the National Data Exchange database in conducting background checks</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 103(e)(1) of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/34/40901">34 U.S.C. 40901(e)(1)</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H2474B6145FFB4DCE91D13242773AFFF4" style="OLC"><subparagraph id="H3F59BB27F93544A58E5F55FE764641B1"><enum>(L)</enum><header>Search of National Data Exchange database</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The system established under this section may search the database of the National Data Exchange in conducting a background check under this section.</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></section></legis-body></bill>
