 kill or target America’s public safety officers.</official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="HD35B7CC6D9394553A7323472768AB970" style="OLC"><section id="H518814D8087645C4AF96D528408728EC" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Thin Blue Line Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HACCC0A40A5834FDD85EA8500FF206CD7"><enum>2.</enum><header>Aggravating factors for death penalty</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 3592(c) of title 18, United States Code, is amended by inserting after paragraph (16) the following:</text><quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H4DB3CA949337405B83685537793BDEAB" style="OLC"><paragraph id="H7A8EEF4E208E415C8FEB6DAC103D8A58"><enum>(17)</enum><header>Killing or targeting of law enforcement officer</header><subparagraph id="HCE9763CD78784AC2B44643E8F608FB5C"><enum>(A)</enum><text>The defendant killed or attempted to kill, in the circumstance described in subparagraph (B), a person who is authorized by law—</text><clause id="H14A16573BA514D96BB716C89F44503E7"><enum>(i)</enum><text>to engage in or supervise the prevention, detention, investigation, or prosecution, or the incarceration of any person for any criminal violation of law;</text></clause><clause id="H4B2F9D252346460E90F5830E1B7B5B84"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>to apprehend, arrest, or prosecute an individual for any criminal violation of law; or</text></clause><clause id="H9209CD8F690640FCB8B443F3BA8AFB85"><enum>(iii)</enum><text>to be a firefighter or other first responder.</text></clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HBB647B99ACAE4B9B8D59DE74D7BB9931"><enum>(B)</enum><text>The circumstance referred to in subparagraph (A) is that the person was killed or targeted—</text><clause id="H42ABB0DDA4664F76BC120989263D72D2"><enum>(i)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">while he or she was engaged in the performance of his or her official duties;</text></clause><clause id="H10274E0A5B884262AAE8F7A3734AB6B5"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>because of the performance of his or her official duties; or</text></clause><clause id="HBC37706F9099487480D689B08C603B4D"><enum>(iii)</enum><text>because of his or her status as a public official or employee.</text></clause></subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></section></legis-body></bill>
