<whereas><text>Whereas reading is a basic requirement for quality education and professional success, and is a source of pleasure throughout life;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas the people of the United States must be able to read if the United States is to remain competitive in the global economy;</text></whereas> 
<whereas><text>Whereas Congress has placed great emphasis on reading intervention and providing additional resources for reading assistance, including through the programs authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/6301">20 U.S.C. 6301</external-xref> et seq.) and through annual appropriations for library and literacy programs; and</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas more than 50 national organizations concerned about reading and education have joined with the National Education Association (NEA) to use March 2nd to celebrate reading and all authors who ignite a love of reading: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H9E45EB6A357247F580A44445724D854A"> 
<section id="H51C2717E2CD84E88867FC7D50E637FB2" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text> <paragraph id="H51723655DD724D5193C80578A00A5180"><enum>(1)</enum><text>honors all authors for their success in encouraging children to discover the joy of reading, including authors like Theodor Geisel (also known as <quote>Dr. Seuss</quote>), and Patricia McKissack;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H1C17D2DDE752474686DD58D1457346A2"><enum>(2)</enum><text>honors the 21st anniversary of Read Across America Day;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H0596B2D02C8D4C5EB0AB1A8324011AB8"><enum>(3)</enum><text>encourages parents, educators, and communities to read with their children for at least 30 minutes on Read Across America Day in honor of the commitment of the House of Representatives to building a Nation of readers; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H5EA00D3A98824C0287A88DA461B3D3A3"><enum>(4)</enum><text>encourages the people of the United States to observe Read Across America Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.</text></paragraph></section> </resolution-body></resolution>
