Mayaguez rescue operation.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H58FF53825088491389EAAA8B51A56BD7" style="OLC"> 
<section id="H87055279965E4E7AB88D809288F1B6C9" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Recognizing Mayaguez Veterans Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="HA5F6A6DEDEBF4FEDBBA2C04C7BDA8A29"><enum>2.</enum><header>Award of Vietnam Service Medal to veterans who participated in Mayaguez rescue operation</header> <subsection id="HE03FF7E2CA6D438191E81C77C840F617"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Award authorized</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary of the military department concerned shall, upon the application by or on behalf of an individual who is an eligible veteran, award that individual the Vietnam Service Medal, notwithstanding any otherwise applicable requirements for the award of that medal. Any such award shall be made in lieu of any Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal awarded the individual for the individual’s participation in the Mayaguez rescue operation.</text></subsection>
<subsection id="H7191E78EB35D467F9180B8790DDDCB11"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Treatment of deceased veterans</header><text>In the case of a veteran who is deceased, the application described in subsection (a) may be submitted by the next of kin of the veteran.</text></subsection> <subsection id="HF3F795567DD949E79048E0F24805F7C3"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Eligible veteran</header><text>For purposes of this section, the term <quote>eligible veteran</quote> means a veteran of the Armed Forces—</text>
<paragraph id="H0F9D29CC0412456596EE051BD60BD13D"><enum>(1)</enum><text>who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations known as the Mayaguez rescue operation of May 12–15, 1975; or</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="HB18563112B414F5BAFD8247053699DB7"><enum>(2)</enum><text>who participated in such operation.</text></paragraph></subsection></section>
