		<official-title>To amend title 38, United States Code, to ensure that
		  deceased veterans with no known next of kin can receive a dignified burial, and
		  for other purposes.</official-title>

		<section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short
			 title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as
			 the <quote><short-title>Dignified Burial of Veterans Act
			 of 2012</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="id0741A1D69A57444E8F8DD0C5EA5B346E"><enum>2.</enum><header>Furnishing
			 caskets and urns for deceased veterans with no known next of kin</header>
			<subsection id="idF35F86C08A074EAA8F16104C57EF4D3D"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 2306 of title
			 38, United States Code, is amended—</text>
				<paragraph id="idD034ABCCF05C44928DB2C4E8BA5C697E"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating
			 subsections (f) and (g) as subsections (g) and (h), respectively;</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="id8F7CF039C1744199A62FD3DA9CD9D3A6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting
			 after subsection (e) the following new subsection (f):</text>
					<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idC6BE9596A55140588E7D6F01FCE0C55C" style="OLC">
						<subsection id="id59622DAC642A4818A8C0187BE099D19C"><enum>(f)</enum><text>The Secretary may
				furnish a casket or urn, of such quality as the Secretary considers appropriate
				for a dignified burial, for burial in a national cemetery of a deceased veteran
				in any case in which the Secretary—</text>
							<paragraph id="idCE45F477300C483392B1E694FE1531CC"><enum>(1)</enum><text>is unable to
				identify the veteran's next of kin, if any; and</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="id55DD2755C0EC43C6BD3B9D19E6F1F8F4"><enum>(2)</enum><text>determines that
				sufficient resources for the furnishing of a casket or urn for the burial of
				the veteran in a national cemetery are not otherwise
				available.</text>
							</paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>;
				and</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="id63A6270A12B24C658D552A7C00D38B79"><enum>(3)</enum><text>in subsection
			 (h), as redesignated by paragraph (1), by adding at the end the following new
			 paragraph:</text>
					<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id8DC5C52DD42D48AD85607819D1AF405A" style="OLC">
						<paragraph id="idB10C96AEB41149E0B6C76802395D6232" indent="up1"><enum>(4)</enum><text>A casket or urn may not be furnished
				under subsection (f) for burial of a person described in section 2411(b) of
				this
				title.</text>
						</paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="id08FB0B6BA38942728C02CFDF70F88188"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective
			 date</header><text>Subsections (f) and (h)(4) of section 2306 of title 38,
			 United States Code, as added by subsection (a), shall take effect on the date
			 of the enactment of this Act and shall apply with respect to deaths occurring
			 on or after such date.</text>
			</subsection></section><section id="id0BB0A441EA4A4F119082A61713B9C5FA"><enum>3.</enum><header>Report on
			 compliance of Department of Veterans Affairs with industry standards for
			 caskets and urns</header>
			<subsection id="idEE0971DFB81A47DF914E17D327E784CC"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 180
			 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Veterans
			 Affairs shall submit to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs of the Senate and
			 the Committee on Veterans' Affairs of the House of Representatives a report on
			 the compliance of the Department of Veterans Affairs with industry standards
			 for caskets and urns.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="idAF35C0C324544E8F848AD4C97AF43684"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Elements</header><text>The
			 report required by subsection (a) shall include the following:</text>
				<paragraph id="id017268B158BE471FA315C3B0AC34B47D"><enum>(1)</enum><text>A description of
			 industry standards for caskets and urns.</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="id0FC15CD297234EDBBEA6600F053A5926"><enum>(2)</enum><text>An assessment of
			 compliance with such standards at National Cemeteries administered by the
			 Department with respect to caskets and urns used for the interment of those
			 eligible for burial at such cemeteries.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body>
