		<legis-type display="yes">RESOLUTION</legis-type>
		<official-title display="yes">Designating the month of August 2009 as
		  <quote>Agent Orange Awareness Month</quote>.</official-title>
	</form>
	<preamble commented="no">
		<whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 between 1964 and 1973, 8,744,000 men and women bravely served our Nation in the
			 Vietnam War;</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 an estimated 2,600,000 service men and women may have been exposed to Agent
			 Orange in Vietnam;</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 Agent Orange is an herbicide that was used during the Vietnam War to kill
			 unwanted plant life and remove leaves from trees that provided cover for the
			 enemy;</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 the United States military sprayed more than 19,000,000 gallons of herbicide
			 throughout South Vietnam, with Agent Orange accounting for approximately
			 11,000,000 gallons of this amount;</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 Agent Orange is an extremely toxic substance that contains dioxin;</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 the Department of Veterans Affairs has recognized that certain cancers and
			 other health problems are associated with exposure to Agent Orange;</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 John Baldacci, the Governor of the State of Maine, has proclaimed August 2009
			 as <quote>Agent Orange Awareness Month</quote> for that State;</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas
			 the State of Alaska has 76,000 veterans, the highest population of veterans per
			 capita, with 26,000 of these being veterans of the Vietnam War; and</text>
		</whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas, as a Nation, we are deeply
			 grateful and thankful for those men and women who bravely served during the
			 Vietnam War: Now, therefore, be it</text>
		</whereas></preamble>
	<resolution-body display-resolving-clause="yes-display-resolving-clause" style="OLC">
		<section commented="no" display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="S1" section-type="undesignated-section"><enum></enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the Senate—</text>
			<paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id02BED08E29814763B163F0449DC322A9"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">designates the month of August 2009 as
			 <quote>Agent Orange Awareness Month</quote>;</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id3C95D9FF776E4C5BB02F9DBA49597815"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">calls attention to those veterans who were
			 exposed to Agent Orange and the adverse effects that such exposure has had on
			 their health;</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id1C90E3E30F7A4042B37FB0241F37E5DE"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">recognizes the sacrifices that our veterans
			 and servicemembers have made and continue to make on behalf of our great
			 Nation, especially those veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange;</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idAB0BEACE6E1A4087878B5FBDF7560331"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">reaffirms its commitment to our Nation's
			 veterans; and</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id3B4F0783CBFB4EDC967BB7837EFC9EB7"><enum>(5)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">does not, by this resolution, authorize,
			 support, or settle any claim against the United States.</text>
