		<official-title>To amend the Public Health Service Act to authorize the
		  Secretary of Health and Human Services to make grants to eligible States for
		  the purpose of reducing the student-to-school nurse ratio in public secondary
		  schools, elementary schools, and kindergarten.</official-title>

		<section id="H978E19D84DB44F5BAAF9FABB33AAD4F4" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Student-to-School Nurse Ratio
			 Improvement Act of 2009</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="H81E874651F1E46268913BFF69EBB4390"><enum>2.</enum><header>Reducing
			 student-to-school nurse ratios</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act
			 (42 U.S.C. 296 et seq.) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text>

				<part id="H960B10C24E8B4FC88C582373A1EEE1DE"><enum>J</enum><header>School
				nurses</header>
					<section id="H59BB9920F7D7482D953300ADB261B2F8"><enum>861.</enum><header>Reducing
				student-to-school nurse ratios</header>
						<subsection id="HF0EEB704A07A4B75BB1F6CCF7E5FB405"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Demonstration
				grants</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary, acting
				through the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, may
				make demonstration grants to eligible States for the purpose of reducing the
				student-to-school nurse ratio in public secondary schools, elementary schools,
				and kindergarten.</text>
						</subsection><subsection id="H139AAEE779D148C88C9C94674FDE095C"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Report</header><text>Not
				later than 24 months after the date of the enactment of this section, the
				Secretary shall submit to the Congress a report on the results of the
				demonstration grant program carried out under this section, including an
				evaluation of the effectiveness of the program in improving the
				student-to-school nurse ratios described in subsection (a) and an evaluation of
				the impact of any resulting enhanced health of students on learning.</text>
						</subsection><subsection id="H7876DEC9A33540D18EF41B736955B29C"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text>For
				purposes of this section:</text>
							<paragraph id="H316AD4BA3B9444679312C5F01C571DE1"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The terms
				<term>elementary school</term> and <term>secondary school</term> have the
				meanings given to those terms in section 9101 of the Elementary and Secondary
				Education Act of 1965.</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="H5EF1E7EFAB0F4139AFE453BDDED2841D"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The term <term>eligible State</term> means
				a State in which the student-to-school nurse ratio in public secondary schools,
				elementary schools, and kindergarten is 750 or more students to every school
				nurse.</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="HD7613993E1694457A0D2A5D1B5CD181F"><enum>(3)</enum><text>The term
				<term>nurse</term> means a licensed nurse.</text>
							</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H0B7C54670B3B40AA8B3BA4152C004FCC"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Authorization of
				appropriations</header><text>To carry out this section, there are authorized to
				be appropriated such sums as may be necessary for each of the fiscal years 2010
				through
				2014.</text>
