<section display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H030C627D99914E0C99704CD1F6E5C7D" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Hate Crime Statistics Improvement Act of 2009</short-title></quote>.</text></section>
<section id="H479C7FF5E23E4D7BB5D2366274007500"><enum>2.</enum><header>Amendment to Hate Crime Statistics Act</header>
<subsection id="H79869B38A27342C1B047FFBA00D4F034"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Subsection (b)(1) of the first section of the Hate Crime Statistics Act (28 U.S.C. 534 note) is amended—</text>
<paragraph id="H31F370D072AC459ABC9C60D874A1CB6C"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking <quote>or</quote> after <quote>sexual orientation,</quote>; and</text></paragraph>
<paragraph id="H3F730D7A10A34C4AAF76CE70EB2BE017"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting <quote>or gender,</quote> after <quote>ethnicity,</quote>.</text></paragraph></subsection>
<subsection id="HAFD381F51B8C4109BDF894B4AEE5CD29"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Application</header><text>The amendment made by subsection (a) applies to data about crimes occurring on or after the first day of the first calendar year after the enactment of this Act.</text></subsection></section>
