		<section display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H38E66A10F47B4E7B8954AE1F9879C56B" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Dignity for our Nation’s Heroes
			 Act</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="H5939260741074540BD817F5F56F4D1A5"><enum>2.</enum><header>Expansion of
			 burial benefits for veterans</header>
			<subsection id="HD070E0C3D16A41E5877C54BF62F4C92E"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Homeless
			 veterans</header>
				<paragraph id="H789B7D1F619D4E3CBE977B9AA38E0CBA"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text>Chapter 23 of such title is amended by inserting after
			 section 2302 the following new section:</text>
					<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HC6B482A944674B399A7E00A2EEC502CC" style="USC">
						<section id="HCAC1AE073A5B47F2A721913F08A23C08"><enum>2302A.</enum><header>Funeral
				expenses for homeless veterans not serving during wartime</header>
							<subsection id="HF7EEFF8656DD4364A0449D4B149967F9"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Payment of
				funeral expenses</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The
				Secretary, in the Secretary’s discretion, having due regard to the
				circumstances in each case, may pay a sum not exceeding the amount authorized
				under section 2302(a) of this title to such person as the Secretary prescribes
				to cover the burial and funeral expenses of a deceased veteran described in
				subsection (b) and the expense of preparing the body and transporting it to the
				place of burial.</text>
							</subsection><subsection id="H996F3EB933C745129B48C01A4ED3D79C"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Homeless
				veteran</header><text>A deceased veteran described in this subsection is an
				individual—</text>
								<paragraph id="H98865007CB894587BE4BEC9F397C7EC2"><enum>(1)</enum><text>whom the Secretary
				determines—</text>
									<subparagraph id="H0E98175DC81848A78F8E5E3915E40D7F"><enum>(A)</enum><text>is a homeless
				veteran (as defined in section 2002(1) of this title);</text>
									</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H9EE6C3FFA73B4F98BAC01A6D3BC6D6D3"><enum>(B)</enum><text>has no next of kin
				or other person claiming the body of the deceased veteran; and</text>
									</subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC9A7E4587233407C808DBCFE49DCB353"><enum>(C)</enum><text>does not have
				available sufficient resources to cover burial and funeral expenses;</text>
									</subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="H7A561EF734A444EA9E5BF9A0BF7C05EE"><enum>(2)</enum><text>whose service in
				the Armed Forces was not during wartime; and</text>
								</paragraph><paragraph id="HF890042C130A4F398CE7291236085C37"><enum>(3)</enum><text>who was
				either—</text>
									<subparagraph id="HD4BECC2396024B719B91F7FDA22C911E"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">discharged from the active military, naval,
				or air service under honorable conditions; or</text>
									</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H737F02D3E95C471E8D86720DAA792033"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">died during a period deemed to be active
				military, naval, or air service under section 106(c) of this title.</text>
									</subparagraph></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H6D9F987B45924ADBAAFD1CBC2A3394D4"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Deductions</header><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="H03FB45AEEC6A45D995EB1326F418BF9E"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Except as provided in
				this subsection, no deduction shall be made from the burial allowance because
				of the veteran’s net assets at the time of the death of such veteran, or
				because of any contribution from any source toward the burial and funeral
				expenses (including transportation) unless the amount of expenses incurred is
				covered by the amount actually paid therefor by the United States, a State, any
				agency or political subdivision of the United States or of a State, or the
				employer of the deceased veteran.</text>
								</paragraph><paragraph id="H0452E11D63104792AFB352C09D3F39F4" indent="up1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>No claim shall be allowed—</text>
									<subparagraph id="H56BFD506F489422E8B3A5A97A26488C3"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">for more than the difference between the
				entire amount of the expenses incurred and an amount paid by the United States,
				a State, any agency or political subdivision of the United States or of a
				State, or the employer of the deceased veteran, as described in paragraph
				(1);</text>
									</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H76B09DDD62A845E3B4DF225E48273B10"><enum>(B)</enum><text>when the burial allowance would revert
				to the funds of a public or private organization or would discharge such an
				organization’s obligation without payment; or</text>
									</subparagraph><subparagraph id="HFC7F0B07FBF749A89E061511F391B734"><enum>(C)</enum><text>in any case where payment of expenses
				of funeral, transportation, and interment for the veteran is made under any
				other Act.</text>
									</subparagraph></paragraph></subsection></section><after-quoted-block>.
				</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="HE8DB75E555624BF3AF7A203B5193EDD6"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Clerical
			 amendment</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The table of
			 sections at the beginning of such chapter is amended by inserting after the
			 item relating to section 2302 the following new item:</text>

				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H5F5443772A04465D9325A3EEAC854D1C"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective
			 date</header><text>The amendment made by subsection (a)(1) shall apply to
			 deaths occurring on or after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text>
