<official-title>To amend Public Law 110–36 to clarify that a period of employment by the Chief of Mission or United States Armed Forces as a security advisor, translator, or interpreter in Iraq or Afghanistan is to be counted as a period of residence and physical presence in the United States for purposes of qualifying for naturalization.</official-title>

<section id="HDB3E43A073084262B4D8A9FCE26F6F5D" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Clarification with respect to absence from the United States due to employment as a translator or interpreter in Iraq or Afghanistan</header> 
<subsection id="H24155EF07805490484C81EA5AAB6CD33"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1(e)(1) of Public Law 110–36 (121 Stat. 228) is amended to read as follows:</text> 
<quoted-block style="OLC" id="H2DEF3E9EE76E4EB99B0DC83DA9FCAF1D" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<paragraph id="HE2204D026A57417485F31CE062BFDDCD"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A period of absence from the United States described in paragraph (2)—</text> 
<subparagraph id="H4606A47AE83144D4BDBE6019AE36CECC"><enum>(A)</enum><text>shall not be considered to break any period for which continuous residence or physical presence in the United States is required for naturalization under title III of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1401 et seq.); and</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HF0E63360C528418D9B2192DFCC78BDD3"><enum>(B)</enum><text>shall be treated as a period of residence and physical presence in the United States for purposes of satisfying the requirements for naturalization under such title.</text></subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection> 
<subsection id="H2286893B33704D6EBEBD7A1912A2EFFB"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Absence described</header><text>Section 1(e)(2)(A) of Public Law 110–36 (121 Stat. 228) is amended to read as follows:</text> 
<quoted-block style="OLC" id="H1C7D5D9927D747BBB9F04A15C1A253D5" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<subparagraph id="H9DA81D2C5C7647D68CE2C4C6B24720C7"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">such employment involved working with the Chief of Mission or United States Armed Forces as translator, interpreter, or in a security position; and</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection> 
<subsection id="HAB3C2F126C4B40768D95A30717AB2B42"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The amendments made by subsections (a) and (b) shall take effect as if included in the enactment of Public Law 110–36.</text> </subsection></section>
