<section id="HE5AEA2AB225F40BA832446B7BD98F22B" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Segal AmeriCorps Education Award Tax Relief Act of 2009</short-title></quote>. </text></section>
<section id="H0CBA28A9A1614DB5B417C41650892B60"><enum>2.</enum><header>Exclusion from gross income of AmeriCorps educational awards</header>
<subsection id="H6566321F7154452495C3E76F07B4C1EF"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 117 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (relating to qualified scholarships) is amended by adding at the end the following new subsection:</text>

<subsection id="H903301A9F1D54A26A327FF5D26841100"><enum>(e)</enum><header>AmeriCorps educational awards</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Gross income shall not include any national service educational award described in subtitle D of title I of the National and Community Service Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. 12601 et seq.).</text></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection>
<subsection id="H896C705EC633437398866547E560F4FE"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendment made by this section shall apply to taxable years ending after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text></subsection></section>
