		<section commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>New Mexico Aquifer Assessment Act of
			 2007</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id05C5E08D770245DC92F5F1D7DA8CBEF5" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">New Mexico water resources study</header>
			<subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="IDe0cdeeedf0fd420fbb2708aba342e324"><enum>(a)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">In General</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary of the Interior, acting
			 through the Director of the United States Geological Survey (referred to in
			 this Act as the <quote>Secretary</quote>), in coordination with the State of
			 New Mexico (referred to in this Act as the <quote>State</quote>) and any other
			 entities that the Secretary determines to be appropriate (including other
			 Federal agencies and institutions of higher education), shall, in accordance
			 with this Act and any other applicable law, conduct a study of water resources
			 in the State, including—</text>
				<paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="IDdda22bf85fe54b3c8c515a332b6edbe7"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">a survey of groundwater resources,
			 including an analysis of—</text>
					<subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="IDf9e9c34ae77a44e0971e53ea1aafec25"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">aquifers in the State, including the
			 quantity of water in the aquifers;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="IDf8f0537e7a964d658769ebdbb61d0f02"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the availability of groundwater resources
			 for human use;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idD707B7FD646F48648F7079D2DA8F0462"><enum>(C)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the salinity of groundwater
			 resources;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idA44E9A376C244931A1085F2B8A96F134"><enum>(D)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the potential of the groundwater resources
			 to recharge;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id07682B34BAF84244A77A27BB075D486C"><enum>(E)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the interaction between groundwater and
			 surface water;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="IDe0340807e5f648ea8db3044620d5445b"><enum>(F)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the susceptibility of the aquifers to
			 contamination; and</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="ID343de3c2c59e4d15b72bdcd9e1a1713d"><enum>(G)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">any other relevant criteria; and</text>
					</subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="IDb0dcc107b1544d74b3ef5e7bfbcee539"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">a characterization of surface and bedrock
			 geology, including the effect of the geology on groundwater yield and
			 quality.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="ID3f1193d55d434e10b4be32dd20ec8abf"><enum>(b)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Study areas</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The study carried out under subsection (a)
			 shall include the Estancia Basin, Salt Basin, Tularosa Basin, Hueco Basin, and
			 middle Rio Grande Basin in the State.</text>
			</subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="ID091665213e0a45c59aed89dadab3cd64"><enum>(c)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Report</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 2 years after the date of
			 enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to the Committee on Energy
			 and Natural Resources of the Senate and the Committee on Resources of the House
			 of Representatives a report that describes the results of the study.</text>
			</subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="ID22ccacfc4eb744b99b357d5d37759656"><enum>(d)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Authorization of
			 Appropriations</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">There are
			 authorized to be appropriated such sums as are necessary to carry out this
			 Act.</text>
