		  study to determine the suitability and feasibility of extending the Lewis and
		  Clark National Historic Trail to include additional sites associated with the
		  preparation and return phases of the expedition, and for other purposes.

		<section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short
			 title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as
			 the <quote>Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Extension Study Act of
			 <deleted-phrase reported-display-style="strikethrough">2007</deleted-phrase><added-phrase reported-display-style="italic"> 2008</added-phrase></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="idA5612D2E39644FB285A13639C8AADF18"><enum>2.</enum><header>Definitions</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">In this Act:</text>
			<paragraph id="id81D27C967D4C4F70B006F8667C8B4284"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Eastern legacy
			 sites</header><text>The term <term>Eastern Legacy sites</term> means the sites
			 associated with the preparation or return phases of the Lewis and Clark
			 expedition, commonly known as the <quote>Eastern Legacy</quote>, including
			 sites in Virginia, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania,
			 West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and
			 Illinois.</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph id="id38A9EB406F0B496EACCD0506D74C9CAA"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Secretary</header><text>The
			 term <term>Secretary</term> means the Secretary of the Interior.</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph id="id360A5B9AA117467AA6B4A9551D02AECB"><enum>(3)</enum><header>Trail</header><text>The
			 term <term>Trail</term> means the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail
			 designated by section 5(a)(6) of the National Trails System Act (16 U.S.C.
			 1244(a)(6)).</text>
			</paragraph></section><section id="idA0B16EAA85A0498D9F4D873E3D4B710B"><enum>3.</enum><header>Lewis and Clark
			 National Historic Trail Extension Study</header>
			<subsection id="IDad2509f64f814ad694999838b7fbbbb5"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text>The Secretary shall conduct a study to determine the
			 suitability and feasibility of extending the Trail to include the Eastern
			 Legacy sites.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="ID1ad82aacf5614578a51b39ac6924fae6"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Contents</header><text>In
			 conducting the study under subsection (a), the Secretary shall—</text>
				<paragraph id="IDd9157ee163734baa8f00ef7bc0569ccf"><enum>(1)</enum><text>evaluate the
			 routes followed by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, whether independently or
			 together, during—</text>
					<subparagraph id="id2F08636F7DE64B81BFE140FC04EB74EE"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the preparation
			 phase of the expedition starting in Monticello, located near Charlottesville,
			 Virginia, and traveling to Wood River, Illinois; and</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="id4B92B431088C4E50838442DBD1168159"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the return phase
			 of the expedition from St. Louis, Missouri, to Washington, D.C.;</text>
					</subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="IDbae3285457304b59b625eb996276ae2a"><enum>(2)</enum><text>evaluate the
			 suitability and feasibility of adding the Eastern Legacy sites to the
			 Trail;</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="ID0252724532674e0381f2f55cd7e4c600"><enum>(3)</enum><text>analyze the
			 potential impact that <deleted-phrase reported-display-style="strikethrough">the </deleted-phrase><deleted-phrase reported-display-style="strikethrough">inclusion of the Eastern Legacy
			 sites</deleted-phrase><added-phrase reported-display-style="italic">adding the
			 Eastern Legacy sites to the Trail</added-phrase> is likely to have on the
			 Eastern Legacy sites; and</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="IDc14a860c4dbf4cccbf005c7e7bfe1bff"><enum>(4)</enum><text>analyze the
			 potential impact that the inclusion of the Eastern Legacy sites in the Trail is
			 likely to have on tourist visitation to the western half of the Trail.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="ID9121117a52d1424b875d383793fdd06f"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Criteria</header><text>The
			 criteria for the study of areas for potential inclusion in the National Park
			 System contained in section 8 of Public Law 91–383 (16 U.S.C. 1a–5) shall apply
			 to the study under subsection (a).</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="IDb7120d47457b49bea24c2e82092cbecd"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Report</header><text>Not
			 later than <deleted-phrase reported-display-style="strikethrough">2</deleted-phrase><added-phrase reported-display-style="italic">3</added-phrase> years after the date on which
			 funds are first made available for the study under subsection (a), the
			 Secretary shall submit to the Committee on Natural Resources of the House of
			 Representatives and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the Senate
			 a report containing—</text>
				<paragraph id="ID679b992566a34291b3290563df93f9b0"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the results of
			 the study; and</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="ID7b4653ce17344bbc910e5f4d2ce949b2"><enum>(2)</enum><text>any conclusions
			 and recommendations of the Secretary.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body>
