<section id="HC2C40C8FB2FB43A7A1AD37FA82CE2B15" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Special immigrant status for certain aliens serving as translators or interpreters with Federal agencies</header> 
<subsection id="HDE5DD725C3554158A0F73997E1653812" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(a)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Increase in numbers admitted</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1059 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1101">8 U.S.C. 1101</external-xref> note) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="HCA41B5DABCA441D981BDEB65002792DA" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in subsection (b)(1)—</text> 
<subparagraph id="H1224000305C74C42977695FC34F8A5B1" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in subparagraph (B), by striking <quote>as a translator</quote> and inserting <quote>, or under Chief of Mission authority, as a translator or interpreter</quote>;</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H910B0D6FE9984AC1B30561C1ACA1FDE3" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in subparagraph (C), by inserting <quote>the Chief of Mission or</quote> after <quote>recommendation from</quote>; and</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H52B6BE9E3DB8499E9E5F00C2AA9E3EBD" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(C)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in subparagraph (D), by inserting <quote>the Chief of Mission or</quote> after <quote>as determined by</quote>; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H9CF70C7D4CA840D5953F003D936E31F5" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in subsection (c)(1), by striking <quote>section during any fiscal year shall not exceed 50.</quote> and inserting the following: “section—</text>

<subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HDF1DC9932C6C439483607856A5007E1E"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">during each of the fiscal years 2007 and 2008, shall not exceed 500; and</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H265CEBDE77B4403794C49EA823FD42E6"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">during any other fiscal year shall not exceed 50.</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H5B26F6F620D6499FA2E2A98D57B2C8B1" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(b)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Aliens exempt from employment-based numerical limitations</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1059(c)(2) of such Act is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="H23B2E0EF9B4146A0B142F42811A70046" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by amending the paragraph designation and heading to read as follows:</text> 
<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HB73BC7CBD65A4D7D85F293CF00006D33" style="OLC"> 
<paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H0995BED45EA84B4DA6BD3B77EE6916B9"><enum>(2)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Aliens exempt from employment-based numerical limitations</header></paragraph><after-quoted-block>; and</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H04C4518484804BAC8586E99669729D" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by inserting <quote>and shall not be counted against the numerical limitations under sections 201(d), 202(a), and 203(b)(4) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1151">8 U.S.C. 1151(d)</external-xref>, 1152(a), and 1153(b)(4))</quote> before the period at the end.</text></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H0F5C5328F8F84B009618064F3E00BEFA" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(c)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Adjustment of status; naturalization</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1059 of such Act is further amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="H1640722300824962B709EE69902CB93C" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by redesignating subsection (d) as subsection (f); and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H322CD73ED1EF42DC00CCE8AD4F04C557" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by inserting after subsection (c) the following:</text>

<subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H5671D9A779C641530067FEE43F30016E"><enum>(d)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Adjustment of status</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Notwithstanding paragraphs (2), (7) and (8) of section 245(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1255">8 U.S.C. 1255(c)</external-xref>), the Secretary of Homeland Security may adjust the status of an alien to that of a lawful permanent resident under section 245(a) of such Act if the alien—</text> 
<paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HF85BB857E18542CB86A49012A743F27"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">was paroled or admitted as a nonimmigrant into the United States; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H59FF58CC5731439BBBA00000A05BD509"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">is otherwise eligible for special immigrant status under this section and under the Immigration and Nationality Act.</text></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H81A621FD192944DA90D5213D4FBBA64D"><enum>(e)</enum><header>Naturalization</header> 
<paragraph id="H2E2657E85DDC408D9D528384D31BEB58"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text>An absence from the United States described in paragraph (2) shall not be considered to break any period for which continuous residence in the United States is required for naturalization under title III of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1401">8 U.S.C. 1401 et seq.</external-xref>).</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H314C4955390E42E2B6F6F3C96C50092"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Absence described</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">An absence described in this paragraph is an absence from the United States due to a person’s employment by the Chief of Mission or United States Armed Forces, under contract with the Chief of Mission or United States Armed Forces, or by a firm or corporation under contract with the Chief of Mission or United States Armed Forces, if—</text> 
<subparagraph id="H61415BDE819F4B13B528515952FF116"><enum>(A)</enum><text>such employment involved working with the Chief of Mission or United States Armed Forces as a translator or interpreter; and</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HA85C8A914F61459DBCB41339DB0005B8"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the person spent at least a portion of the time outside of the United States working directly with the Chief of Mission or United States Armed Forces as a translator or interpreter in Iraq or Afghanistan.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection></section>
