<official-title>To recognize those astronauts who participated in missions to the moon in the Apollo program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration by authorizing their appointment to the grade of major general or rear admiral on the retired list, and for other purposes.</official-title>

<section id="H019385F5AC164971B0B500E11E506466" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Authority to appoint astronauts who participated in moon missions of the Apollo program to the grade of major general or rear admiral on the retired list</header> 
<subsection id="HFD84E12022C94A009D46D599C7B7037"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Appointment as major general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The President is authorized to appoint, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, each astronaut who participated in a mission to the moon in the Apollo program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is on the retired list of the Army, Air Force, or Marine Corps to the grade of major general on the applicable retired list.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H50BC8091DBF74DE9A403DD636598BCC"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Appointment as rear admiral</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The President is authorized to appoint, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, each astronaut who participated in a mission to the moon in the Apollo program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is on the retired list of the Navy to the grade of rear admiral on the retired list of the Navy.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H889A409A5413424089C38225B71D20A0"><enum>(c)</enum><header>No effect on retired pay or other benefits</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Any appointment made under the authority of subsection (a) or (b) shall not affect the retired pay or other benefits of the member of the Armed Forces so appointed or any benefits to which any other person is or may become entitled based upon the service of that member.</text></subsection></section> 
<section id="H035E3D41AE664900A9B3B40657690306"><enum>2.</enum><header>Posthumous commission for deceased astronauts who participated in the Apollo moon missions</header> 
<subsection id="H3F4840A3D2C24174A5C12FFD65418D51"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Authority</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, may issue posthumously a commission as major general or rear admiral in the appropriate branch of the Armed Forces in the name of any astronaut who participated in a mission to the moon in the Apollo program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is deceased.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HF635C7A302664950AF35CB50CEC2C52"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Date of commission</header><text>A commission issued under subsection (a) shall issue as of the date of the death of the deceased member of the Armed Forces receiving the commission.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H4DB2F5CFC22D474C8E4E9302EF2C48FD"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Prohibition of benefits</header><text>No person is entitled to receive any bonus, gratuity, pay, allowance, or other financial benefit by reason of the enactment of this section.</text></subsection></section> 
<section id="HAEA5BAFE55DD45DEA33074C110BE9374"><enum>3.</enum><header>Designation as Lunar Ambassadors for civilian astronauts who participated in the Apollo moon missions</header> 
<subsection id="HF66310980B2E4853BA36B9E133F8A605"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Authority</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The President is authorized to appoint, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, as a Lunar Ambassador each astronaut who—</text> 
<paragraph id="H2F6DF093F8974E74AB7998AAEE30EA99"><enum>(1)</enum><text>participated in a mission to the moon in the Apollo program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HEA6FE5E2FF7242FE862049255DAA3A3"><enum>(2)</enum><text>is not a member of the Armed Forces.</text></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H6E3684092A9C499E0069AD82AD6C7069"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Prohibition of benefits</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">No person is entitled to receive any bonus, gratuity, pay, allowance, or other financial benefit by reason of the enactment of this section.</text></subsection></section>
