		<official-title>To amend the Public Health Service Act to authorize the
		  Secretary of Health and Human Services to make grants to eligible States for
		  the purpose of reducing the student-to-school nurse ratio in public secondary
		  schools, elementary schools, and kindergarten.</official-title>

		<section id="H6801FC7A15CA4B0A9663C4C3201D3306" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Student to School Nurse Ratio Improvement Act of
			 2008</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="H4EDD81CF78C4425087423DB00128AF19"><enum>2.</enum><header>Reducing
			 student-to-school nurse ratios</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act
			 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/296">42 U.S.C. 296 et seq.</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text>

				<part id="HF42D766A825F435C8725BDFF8D08B78"><enum>J</enum><header>School
				nurses</header>
					<section id="H8D1538138C9A43358CC5C3CFFAD60500"><enum>861.</enum><header>Reducing
				student-to-school nurse ratios</header>
						<subsection id="H6818417B6A8C47B7B85097ABE02053B8"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Grants</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary, acting through the Director
				of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, may make grants to eligible
				States for the purpose of reducing the student-to-school nurse ratio in public
				secondary schools, elementary schools, and kindergarten.</text>
						</subsection><subsection id="HB903B01987564F8DA27E52115D2004F0"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Report</header><text>Not
				later than 12 months after the date of the enactment of this section, the
				Secretary shall submit to the Congress a report on the results of the grant
				program carried out under this section, including an evaluation of the
				effectiveness of the program in improving the student-to-school nurse rations
				described in subsection (a) and an evaluation of the impact of any resulting
				enhanced health of students on learning.</text>
						</subsection><subsection id="H8FC8B613F2D14EEBBD529E9F560088C4"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text>For
				purposes of this section:</text>
							<paragraph id="HCF2098849D504F69B0383CA1EBF258F1"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The terms
				<term>elementary school</term> and <term>secondary school</term> have the
				meanings given to those terms in section 9101 of the Elementary and Secondary
				Education Act of 1965.</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="H214A784FF5B74A738B962FDAA92483FD"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The term <term>eligible State</term> means
				a State in which the student-to-school nurse ratio in public secondary schools,
				elementary schools, and kindergarten is 1000 or more students to every school
				nurse.</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="H750FC199EC7B4E9DB5F8C08DE5C24B4"><enum>(3)</enum><text>The term
				<term>nurse</term> shall have such meaning as specified by the Director.</text>
							</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H7586F842B2524D3F92004F7ED9B44A1"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Authorization of
				appropriations</header><text>To carry out this section, there are authorized to
				be appropriated such sums as may be necessary for each of the fiscal years 2009
				through
				2013.</text>
