<section id="H2B9095302CEE42DEBEA9EB2957FF22E9" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Exception to prohibition</header> 
<subsection id="H200039B3D9624C1EBE8FE15D3B9EB4D8"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline"><external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/5/1503">Section 1503</external-xref> of title 5, United States Code, is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="HFFFB290C40B8409D85E76BAD0EF3C39"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by inserting <quote>(a)</quote> before <quote>Section</quote>; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H8BC74B4DD1AE4469992E2BD5D0F82754"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following:</text>

<subsection id="HECDBB0CFD87E4452844F7E47FDD9DC4" indent="up1"><enum>(b)</enum> 
<paragraph id="HEF56F169A36C4889AEF2A3E61E75A710" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Section 1502(a)(3) does not prohibit any State or local officer or employee from being a candidate for any office of any local unit of general purpose government which has a population of less than 100,000 (determined in accordance with regulations under section 1302(d) based on the most recent population data available under <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/13/183">section 183(a)</external-xref> of title 13).</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HFC373A6939214E9282F74F2C75DED1EA" indent="up1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>For purposes of this subsection, the term <term>local unit of general purpose government</term> has the meaning given such term by <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/13/184">section 184</external-xref> of title 13. </text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="HF31DD042595E412E8D6D9E1B1313B6D7"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Technical and conforming amendments</header> 
<paragraph id="H66E5F8A9C3974326AFB5D060E6E7F804" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The heading for <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/5/1503">section 1503</external-xref> of title 5, United States Code, is amended by inserting <quote><header-in-text level="section" style="USC">and certain other</header-in-text></quote> before <quote><header-in-text level="section" style="USC">candidacies permitted</header-in-text></quote>.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HC67BAD02262F4C89BA00AEA80836D95B" indent="up1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>The table of sections for <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/5/15">chapter 15</external-xref> of title 5, United States Code, is amended by striking the item relating to section 1503 and inserting the following:</text>
