<official-title>To authorize grants to establish and improve criminal forensic laboratories.</official-title>

<section id="H1849B00F3CFD4845AFAFCB001402CDD0" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>State and Local Criminal Forensic Laboratory Enhancement Act of 2007</short-title></quote>.</text></section> 
<section id="H6645F094DD7845198014D6F18B5CF25C" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Grants authorized</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Subject to the availability of appropriations, the Attorney General shall award grants to States, units of local government, and Indian Tribes to—</text> 
<paragraph id="HD532493C217444919CBF008FC7E5C106"><enum>(1)</enum><text>establish new criminal forensic laboratories to provide the services necessary for State, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute crimes;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H5B5A26614DEE41EFBDBA1BE70900AE76"><enum>(2)</enum><text>expand or improve existing criminal forensic laboratories to provide the services described in <internal-xref idref="HD532493C217444919CBF008FC7E5C106" legis-path="2.(1)">paragraph (1)</internal-xref>;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H88C005B66FEA43B29D87F03B08F788DD"><enum>(3)</enum><text>hire and train new forensic laboratory professionals and technicians necessary to provide the services described in <internal-xref idref="HD532493C217444919CBF008FC7E5C106" legis-path="2.(1)">paragraph (1)</internal-xref>; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H3A78606D60324554BF6FB273C3CB56C5"><enum>(4)</enum><text>for any other purpose the Attorney General determines to be necessary to improve State, local, and tribal criminal forensic laboratory services. </text></paragraph></section> 
<section id="H75E2A5D53A43451F00B8E12F3DD751CA"><enum>3.</enum><header>Selection of grantees</header> 
<subsection id="H32AC1BB264104C1E977699E440AFC1A"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Applications</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A State, unit of local government, or Indian Tribe desiring a grant under this Act shall submit to the Attorney General an application at such time, in such manner, and containing such information as the Attorney General may require.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HCBBF075ECB4443B890411C0530134017"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Priority</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In awarding grants under this Act, the Attorney General shall give priority to State, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies with the largest backlogs of criminal forensic examinations per capita, compared with other State, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies, respectively. </text></subsection></section> 
<section id="H663A31059F8E4E1EBE592F1DF3873972"><enum>4.</enum><header>Authorization of appropriations</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this Act $30,000,000 for fiscal year 2008 and for each subsequent fiscal year.</text> </section>
