<official-title>To provide for a program of research, development, and demonstration on natural gas vehicles.</official-title>

<section id="H144C0D14FD904584B06283710201CA27" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Natural gas vehicle research, development, and demonstration projects</header> 
<subsection id="H61307A96C9A14C9FB1F2D6A93568329"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In General</header><text>The Secretary of Energy shall conduct a 5-year program of natural gas vehicle research, development, and demonstration. The Secretary shall coordinate with the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, as necessary.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HDAAEEF13A96F4EC38FE86B7C52FE5FD"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Purpose</header><text>The program under this section shall focus on—</text> 
<paragraph id="HAD0828551D0444F289CF43A4C6FA1E22"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the continued improvement and development of new, cleaner, more efficient light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty natural gas vehicle engines;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HC3A24CA0BB9346F5B566AEF0A49FF3E"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the integration of those engines into light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty natural gas vehicles for onroad and offroad applications;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H4EFA1C6D42F94D83A8FD55D79B937DB9"><enum>(3)</enum><text>expanding product availability by assisting manufacturers with the certification of the engines or vehicles described in paragraph (1) or (2) to Federal or California certification requirements and in-use emission standards;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H93E6345C9FDA4F799350325B8EE256E5"><enum>(4)</enum><text>the demonstration and proper operation and use of the vehicles described in paragraph (2) under all operating conditions;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H4F459198A2E44E869E207581EEB925"><enum>(5)</enum><text>the development and improvement of nationally recognized codes and standards for the continued safe operation of natural gas vehicles and their components;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H54A8527989204A2EB564E9D08D03A01B"><enum>(6)</enum><text>improvement in the reliability and efficiency of natural gas fueling station infrastructure;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H3B2DE1BD6E4C40B985757304314DDAB8"><enum>(7)</enum><text>the certification of natural gas fueling station infrastructure to nationally recognized and industry safety standards;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H85B2FAE074DA40ADAF75192F31E7A0A8"><enum>(8)</enum><text>the improvement in the reliability and efficiency of onboard natural gas fuel storage systems;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HE38A081B5CCE4662A577869487256648"><enum>(9)</enum><text>the development of new natural gas fuel storage materials;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HF01EEB350B5B449E95C8147E10DDB7CE"><enum>(10)</enum><text>the certification of onboard natural gas fuel storage systems to nationally recognized and industry safety standards; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H007C7F12EF7540CA9CD5F83383082E97"><enum>(11)</enum><text>the use of natural gas engines in hybrid vehicles.</text></paragraph> </subsection> 
<subsection id="H3B243EFA99EC45478F12B817361BA900"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Certification of conversion systems</header><text>The Secretary shall coordinate with the Administrator on issues related to streamlining the certification of natural gas conversion systems to the appropriate Federal certification requirements and in-use emission standards.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H7570270024794F38A170BE48C435ABC2"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Cooperation and Coordination with Industry</header><text>In developing and carrying out the program under this section, the Secretary shall coordinate with the natural gas vehicle industry to ensure cooperation between the public and the private sector.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H47AF1849B4794023988FF600C847BAB1"><enum>(e)</enum><header>Conduct of program</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The program under this section shall be conducted in accordance with sections 3001 and 3002 of the Energy Policy Act of 1992.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HBAA63DA9EA8D4CFA8EEC21A45D8449A5"><enum>(f)</enum><header>Report</header><text>Not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall provide a report to Congress on the implementation of this section.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HAE7621F55A4E4587A8CE6D6F636EE5AD"><enum>(g)</enum><header>Authorization of Appropriations</header><text>There are authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary $20,000,000 for each of the fiscal years 2008 through 2012 to carry out this section.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H7072B009BEB04FFDB2C92D1858DA2DC7"><enum>(h)</enum><header>Definition</header><text>For purposes of this section, the term <quote>natural gas</quote> means compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, biomethane, and mixtures of hydrogen and methane or natural gas.</text></subsection></section>
