		<section id="HCBD33F9AB49144489C9458EAA819EF62" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Public Official Accountability
			 Act</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H56AD100BC9094A7485385B2C90DFBB30" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Criminal penalties for
			 public officials</header>
			<subsection id="H7FB4BAA3314740D1ABA42CF153970EB"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Subchapter D of
			 <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/18/227">chapter 227</external-xref> of title 18, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end
			 the following:</text>
				<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HFA91F49E14064E71B69998CC00FEA3A7" style="USC">
					<section id="HA015B0FE8E1D4000B0BA104F936348D6"><enum>3587.</enum><header>Increased
				imprisonment for certain offenses by public officials.</header>
						<subsection id="HFCC0A1F82476438DBBACB99E9FFFBFC6"><enum>(a)</enum><header>General
				rule</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In any Federal criminal
				case in which a public official is convicted of an offense against the United
				States—</text>
							<paragraph id="H2BF24641D0974981A6FE00CF00BAE1BD"><enum>(1)</enum><text>consisting of
				conduct during the course of official duty, intended to enrich that official;
				and</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="H16BB9B0FF9E04E1FA0630424B9BE28E2"><enum>(2)</enum><text>involving bribery,
				fraud, extortion, or theft of public funds greater than $10,000;</text>
							</paragraph><continuation-text continuation-text-level="subsection">the
				sentencing judge may increase the sentence of imprisonment by an amount of up
				to 2 years. The sentencing judge may double the sentence of imprisonment that
				would otherwise be imposed in that case: <italic>Provided, however,</italic>
				That in no instance may the sentencing judge be allowed to increase the
				sentence by more than 2 years.</continuation-text></subsection><subsection id="HBA3E47AE488D458BA3847E8BA451B950"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Definition</header><text>In
				this section, the term <quote>public official</quote> means—</text>
							<paragraph id="H6CBFFBE0C7F74C348500FBDDC1F835BB"><enum>(1)</enum><text>an elected
				official of the United States or of a State or local government;</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="H516B526786F54538A46CF33490D6C3DA"><enum>(2)</enum><text>a
				presidentially-appointed official; and</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="H984F76CB24AA4B0ABBB39ED9BC9204E7"><enum>(3)</enum><text>an official
				appointed to a State or local governmental office by an elected official of a
				State or local
				government.</text>
							</paragraph></subsection></section><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
			</subsection><subsection id="H2365394819124E58983CC8EA37EDE40"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Clerical
			 amendment</header><text>The table of sections at the beginning of subchapter D
			 of <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/18/227">chapter 227</external-xref> of title 18, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end
			 the following new item:</text>
