<section id="HA879A56487314B8DB5B8630472337B46" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Repeal of the 1954 Johnson Amendment banning the Free Speech and First Amendment rights of churches and exempt organizations</header> 
<subsection id="H7BDC0F6C4DAB413F93FBAE617E477772"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Paragraph (3) of <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/26/501">section 501(c)</external-xref> of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (relating to list of exempt organizations) is amended by striking <quote>, and which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office</quote>.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H973FBE7D1B194EEC8B252E2F088E1BF"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by this section shall apply to taxable years ending after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H5210070C181442FE92C722EF18C9A168"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Campaign finance laws unaffected</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The amendments made by this section shall not invalidate or limit any provision of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/2/431">2 U.S.C. 431 et seq.</external-xref>). </text> </subsection></section>
