		<official-title display="yes">Expressing the sense of the Senate that

		  public servants should be commended for their dedication and continued service

		  to the Nation during Public Service Recognition Week, May 2 through 8,

		  2005.</official-title>

	<preamble>

		<whereas><text>Whereas Public Service Recognition Week provides an

			 opportunity to honor and celebrate the commitment of men and women who meet the

			 needs of the Nation through work at all levels of government;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas over 18,000,000 individuals work in government

			 service in every city, county, and State across America and in hundreds of

			 cities abroad;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Federal, State, and local officials perform

			 essential services the Nation relies upon every day;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States of America is a great and

			 prosperous nation, and public service employees contribute significantly to

			 that greatness and prosperity;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Nation benefits daily from the knowledge and

			 skills of these highly trained individuals;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants—</text>

			 recover from natural disasters and terrorist attacks;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idEFE9E2E0CF6447B8B8A7E19A2A3E0C57"><enum>(2)</enum><text>provide vital

			 strategic support functions to our military and serve in the National Guard and

			 Reserves;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="id1E1F2A9CBD9347F99ECB01DB3712CB0D"><enum>(3)</enum><text>fight crime and

			 fire;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="id200065E3468240D1B0F38712433A66FA"><enum>(4)</enum><text>deliver the

			 United States mail;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="id518BF0B2D389403B97CE5F8F24E2945F"><enum>(5)</enum><text>deliver social

			 security and medicare benefits;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idD88DFE9255B24D259AD1879A6907EC60"><enum>(6)</enum><text>fight disease and

			 promote better health;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idDCAEFCF61A09477685FFFB6DC7F76439"><enum>(7)</enum><text>protect the

			 environment and the Nation’s parks;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="id6336F452092642BC879C900BE8F8B8D9"><enum>(8)</enum><text>defend and secure

			 critical infrastructure;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idB7804D7544844CD8AB6E1FDCAE1E4C25"><enum>(9)</enum><text>teach and work in

			 our schools and libraries;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idAFB56B67592542DBBEE653E9366D4CF8"><enum>(10)</enum><text>improve and

			 secure our transportation systems;</text>

			 Nation’s economy stable; and</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="id6D68DAE9F18F48EAB27060EE5B4F7732"><enum>(12)</enum><text>defend our

			 freedom and advance United States interests around the world;</text>

			</paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants at every level of government are

			 hard-working men and women, committed to doing their jobs regardless of the

			 circumstances;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas members of the uniformed services and civilian

			 employees at all levels of government make significant contributions to the

			 general welfare of the United States, and are on the front lines in the fight

			 against terrorism and in maintaining homeland security;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants work in a professional manner to

			 build relationships with other countries and cultures in order to better

			 represent America’s interests and promote American ideals;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Federal, State, and local government employees

			 have risen to the occasion and demonstrated professionalism, dedication, and

			 courage while fighting the war against terrorism;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants alert Congress and the public to

			 government waste, fraud, abuse, and dangers to public health;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the men and women serving in the Armed Forces of

			 the United States, as well as those skilled trade and craft Federal employees

			 who provide support to their efforts, contribute greatly to the security of the

			 Nation and the world;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas government workers have much to offer, as

			 demonstrated by their expertise and innovative ideas, and serve as examples by

			 passing on institutional knowledge to train the next generation of public

			 servants;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas May 2 through 8, 2005, has been designated Public

			 Service Recognition Week to honor America’s Federal, State, and local

			 government employees;</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the theme for Public Service Recognition Week 2005

			 is Celebrating Government Workers Nationwide to highlight the important work

			 civil servants perform throughout the Nation; and</text>

		</whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Public Service Recognition Week is celebrating its

			 21st anniversary through job fairs, student activities, and agency exhibits:

			 Now, therefore, be it</text>

		</whereas></preamble>

	<resolution-body>

		<section display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="S1" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text>

			<paragraph id="idA147D2B43C4C4DB6BCFC90E544B36C59"><enum>(1)</enum><text>commends public

			 servants for their outstanding contributions to this great Nation;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idF74867099C314F21B0EE1AED7DAC6C3E"><enum>(2)</enum><text>salutes their

			 unyielding dedication and spirit for public service;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idE432F9790BB54FD6A27E11C4D22A16BE"><enum>(3)</enum><text>honors those

			 government employees who have given their lives in service to their

			 country;</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idED87BD82F19A4BC090C1B24B06AC4DC4"><enum>(4)</enum><text>calls upon a new

			 generation of workers to consider a career in public service as an honorable

			 profession; and</text>

			</paragraph><paragraph id="idCFF39CA213454680AA24E812953CF637"><enum>(5)</enum><text>encourages

			 efforts to promote public service careers at all levels of government.</text>
