		<official-title>To designate Lebanon under section 244(b) of the
		  Immigration and Naturalization Act to permit nationals of Lebanon to be granted
		  temporary protected status in the United States.</official-title>

		<section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short
			 title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as
			 the <quote><short-title>Lebanese Temporary Protected
			 Status Act of 2006</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="IDfb29a5a04fd84e6384198da97b0809ef"><enum>2.</enum><header>Sense of
			 Congress</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">It is the sense of
			 Congress that, due to the hostilities in Lebanon, Lebanon qualifies for
			 designation under subparagraphs (A) and (C) of section 244(b)(1) of the
			 Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1254a(b)(1)), pursuant to which
			 Lebanese nationals would be eligible for temporary protected status in the
			 United States.</text>
		</section><section id="ID4388b2d310fb4feea6625d3dcd1f4b05"><enum>3.</enum><header>Designation for
			 purposes of granting temporary protected status</header>
			<subsection id="ID5e2c0d61a33a463397cda9a6e6966684"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Designation</header>
				<paragraph id="idDD1A51FA5E7441CD9E46EC1F488A0DC0"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text>For purposes of section 244 of the Immigration and
			 Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1254a), Lebanon shall be treated as if it had been
			 designated under subsection (b) of that section, subject to the provisions of
			 this section.</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="IDa5d1ec170d024faa8f83c37dcbbfa5e5"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Period of
			 designation</header><text>The initial period of the designation under paragraph
			 (1) shall begin on the date of the enactment of this Act and shall remain in
			 effect for 1 year.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="IDabbc818215444fb19da7326844cbf97e"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Aliens
			 eligible</header><text>An alien who is a national of Lebanon shall be deemed to
			 satisfy the requirements of section 244(c)(1) of such Act only if the
			 alien—</text>
				<paragraph id="ID0b904aad691543efa2b7bf4c0a75866e"><enum>(1)</enum><text>has been
			 continuously physically present in the United States since the date of the
			 enactment of this Act;</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="IDaae21b114c9e48b4ae744b07956fc98a"><enum>(2)</enum><text>is admissible to
			 the United States as an immigrant, except as otherwise provided under section
			 244(c)(2)(A) of such Act;</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="idE5E5DAE74F844F72A94AB1F27D3DBFB4"><enum>(3)</enum><text>is not ineligible
			 for temporary protected status under section 244(c)(2)(B) of such Act;
			 and</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="IDca85cdb6ac4e418d9f8aee2fd550084d"><enum>(4)</enum><text>registers for
			 temporary protected status in a manner established by the Secretary of Homeland
			 Security.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="ID35c246d145174771a03446140d008803"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Consent to
			 travel abroad</header><text>The Secretary of Homeland Security shall give an
			 alien granted temporary protected status pursuant to the designation made under
			 subsection (a) prior consent to travel abroad under section 244(f)(3) of such
			 Act if the alien establishes to the satisfaction of the Secretary that
			 emergency and extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the alien require
			 the alien to depart for a brief, temporary trip abroad. An alien returning to
			 the United States in accordance with such an authorization shall be given the
			 same treatment as any other returning alien provided temporary protected status
			 under section 244 of such Act.</text>
