		  study of water resources in the State of New Mexico, and for other
		  purposes.</official-title>

		<section id="H815C8FD1F94A422CBE56BDF0EFCB596C" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>New Mexico Aquifer Assessment Act of
			 2006</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="H6EEAB7EB228749D0B887F9B0602C8D00"><enum>2.</enum><header>New mexico water
			 resources study</header>
			<subsection id="H4748B58A112E4FF88E000341C6237EBC"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text>The Secretary of the Interior, acting through the
			 Director of the United States Geological Survey (referred to in this Act as the
			 <quote>Secretary</quote>), in coordination with the State of New Mexico
			 (referred to in this Act as the <quote>State</quote>), shall, in accordance
			 with this Act and any other applicable law, conduct a study of water resources
			 in the State, including the following:</text>
				<paragraph id="HF733CE3CA4C8490FBD38D77FEC3E779C"><enum>(1)</enum><text>A
			 survey of groundwater resources, including an analysis of—</text>
					<subparagraph id="H7A305234D77141FA869941344DDE155F"><enum>(A)</enum><text>aquifers in the
			 State, including the quantity of water in the aquifers;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H1ECE6C6216184AEBB01F7B1F5F1925D9"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the availability
			 of groundwater resources for human use;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC70A754F7AB44A1F979BC000CF92D311"><enum>(C)</enum><text>the salinity of
			 groundwater resources;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H0500DC36AFCE479D83558332826B00BB"><enum>(D)</enum><text>the potential of
			 the groundwater resources to recharge;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H8E3FFD955D6B4E0385CD00AA710353D"><enum>(E)</enum><text>the interaction
			 between groundwater and surface water;</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC621E5DE7FFA4315B732D346DA7403C1"><enum>(F)</enum><text>the susceptibility
			 of the aquifers to contamination; and</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="HFF1538E44E554839B67C67B641C986D4"><enum>(G)</enum><text>any other relevant
			 criteria; and</text>
					</subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="H91DC0F6225224F24A500B071D2D9D100"><enum>(2)</enum><text>A
			 characterization of surface and bedrock geology, including the effect of the
			 geology on groundwater yield and quality.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H463FB4C065D24950B8316930214337DC"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Study
			 areas</header><text>The study carried out under subsection (a) shall include
			 the Salt Basin, the Tularosa Basin, and the middle Rio Grande Aquifer in the
			 State.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="H99F633B906564093936F31FCB014CD51"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Report</header><text>Not
			 later than 2 years after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary
			 shall submit to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the Senate and
			 the Committee on Resources of the House of Representatives a report that
			 describes the results of the study.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="H959A9F9AF32C4FDA8E00EEB193B6A756"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Authorization of
			 appropriations</header><text>There are authorized to be appropriated such sums
			 as are necessary to carry out this Act.</text>
