		<section id="HE126C68701894AA5984F4CC527F1CE98" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Classroom Commitment Partnership Act
			 of 2006</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="HC4FDAF3CD7614B2400AD001FA19DFAC1"><enum>2.</enum><header>Demonstration
			 grant program</header>
			<subsection id="H3E3938D76C4D4047925C6E4341C1D035"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">From amounts made
			 available to carry out this Act, the Secretary of Education shall make
			 demonstration grants to States for the purpose of extending the length of the
			 academic year at elementary and secondary schools within the State to not fewer
			 than 200 academic days of not fewer than 7 hours each.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="HCF3EF731B6A74C809D0469D11EEA76E9"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Period of
			 grant</header><text>A grant under this section shall be awarded for a period of
			 3 consecutive academic years. The provision of payments under such a grant is
			 subject to annual approval by the Secretary and subject to the availability of
			 appropriations for the fiscal year involved to make the payments.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="HF9D4566E9D604D07BA197DD1A1169E5E"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Eligibility</header><text>To
			 be eligible for a grant under this Act, a State must, for the entire period
			 covered by the grant, have in effect laws and policies that ensure that each
			 elementary and secondary school in the State uses an academic year of not fewer
			 than 200 academic days, with each such academic day of not fewer than 7 hours
			 devoted to actual instruction.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="H5EA946B818EC4B368170F6BDBFFB30C9"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Application</header><text>To
			 receive a grant under this Act, a State must submit to the Secretary an
			 application that contains—</text>
				<paragraph id="H82C581E5D2704205A19FCE2BE3F657D"><enum>(1)</enum><text>assurances
			 satisfactory to the Secretary that the State will be eligible for the grant for
			 the entire period covered by the grant;</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="H579DF618DFFE4A8681F141B6ED181186"><enum>(2)</enum><text>a
			 description of the State’s plan for using the grant amounts to carry out the
			 purpose of the grant program; and</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="H2501D662B5E34FFEA55E5461EA32652B"><enum>(3)</enum><text>an estimate of the
			 cost of the plan.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H8228912A32354A3B8352321228F67438"><enum>(e)</enum><header>Selection</header><text>In
			 selecting States to receive grants under this Act, the Secretary shall select
			 only those States that do not use an academic year of not fewer than 200
			 academic days of not fewer than 7 hours devoted to actual instruction.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="H9A83517B48D14FEA9BFD65B8D4567DEC"><enum>(f)</enum><header>Authorization of
			 appropriations</header><text>There are authorized to be appropriated to carry
			 out this Act $500,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2007 through 2009.</text>
