		<official-title display="yes">To amend the Immigration and Nationality
		  Act to exempt certain elderly persons from demonstrating an understanding of
		  the English language and the history, principles, and form of government of the
		  United States as a requirement for naturalization, and to permit certain other
		  elderly persons to take the history and government examination in a language of
		  their choice.</official-title>

		<section display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H854679A46A8647E7A000A61D5BE64E48" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Senior Citizenship Act of
			 2006</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="H1FE877D13B4442C5ACBCCC037A15942"><enum>2.</enum><header>Fulfillment by
			 elderly persons of requirement for naturalization relating to knowledge of
			 English language</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section
			 312(b)(2) of the <act-name parsable-cite="INA">Immigration and Nationality
			 Act</act-name> (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1423">8 U.S.C. 1423(b)(2)</external-xref>) is amended—</text>
			<paragraph id="H305908F136A54BBA8637DA34EA94A524"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the matter
			 preceding subparagraph (A), by striking <quote>334, either—</quote> and
			 inserting <quote>334—</quote>;</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph id="H669E96DE44AE462CB7F2D99F33218F7"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in
			 subparagraph (A), by striking <quote>, or</quote> at the end and inserting a
			 semicolon;</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph id="H71652F7677FE4E879E78A706F78E5960"><enum>(3)</enum><text>in subparagraph
			 (B), by striking the period at the end and inserting <quote>; or</quote>;
			 and</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph id="H2535CDB72CF8464DA16536F5674B16A2"><enum>(4)</enum><text>by adding at the
			 end the following:</text>
				<quoted-block id="H8865E3789EB140FE8226BEE9502F7D3E">
					<subclause id="H0C42F9D063A347C18F5600509EC0161F" indent="up3"><enum>(C)</enum><text>is over sixty-five years of age and
				has been living in the United States for periods totaling at least five years
				subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent
				residence.</text>
					</subclause><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
			</paragraph></section><section id="H0BE08D8618564BABAE3B9629CA45022"><enum>3.</enum><header>Fulfillment by
			 elderly persons of requirement for naturalization relating to knowledge of
			 government of the United States</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 312(b)(3) of the
			 <act-name parsable-cite="INA">Immigration and Nationality Act</act-name> (8
			 U.S.C. 1423(b)(3)) is amended—</text>
			<paragraph id="H194994E381304EAF875D3FEEF56ED848"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking
			 <quote>Attorney General</quote> each place such term appears and inserting
			 <quote>Secretary of Homeland Security</quote>;</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph id="H450D67EDE8AB47B5B542563800BF3E1D"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by striking
			 <quote>(3)</quote> and inserting <quote>(3)(A)</quote>; and</text>
			</paragraph><paragraph id="HF0A9C61D88C945869DEA995B7F008900"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by adding at the
			 end the following:</text>
				<quoted-block id="H17EE4F7BBD254358ABE103DC898498ED">
					<subparagraph id="H3B0C907FCF1A45FE0089DD2989D2FD60" indent="up2"><enum>(B)</enum><text>In the case of a person who, on the
				date of the filing of the person’s application for naturalization, as provided
				in section 334, is over sixty-five years of age and has been living in the
				United States for periods totaling at least five years subsequent to a lawful
				admission for permanent residence, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall
				permit the person to fulfill the requirement of subsection (a)(2) through an
				examination in a language other than English selected by the person.</text>
					</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H656D40107EB54BB48F5E5285857429DB" indent="up2"><enum>(C)</enum><text>In the case of a person who, on the
				date of the filing of the person’s application for naturalization, as provided
				in section 334, is over seventy-five years of age and has been living in the
				United States for periods totaling at least five years subsequent to a lawful
				admission for permanent residence, the requirement of subsection (a)(2) shall
				not
				apply.</text>
					</subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
			</paragraph></section><section id="H945C62220F0848EB8126BB583072FFC"><enum>4.</enum><header>Effective
			 date</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">The amendments made by
			 this Act shall take effect on the date of the enactment of this Act and shall
			 apply to applications for naturalization pending on or after such date.</text>
