		<official-title>To amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to provide
		  for an increase in the Federal minimum wage, and for other
		  purposes.</official-title>

		<section display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HC0D5113286E840D38C991EF2666572AD" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short Title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Minimum Wage Competitiveness Act of
			 2006</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="HB80F44A617BE4B2D920086007F25B4BA"><enum>2.</enum><header>Minimum
			 wage</header>
			<subsection id="H550322047C5A436FABC7A610872EB2E"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 6(a)(1) of
			 the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/29/206">29 U.S.C. 206(a)(1)</external-xref>) is amended to read
			 as follows:</text>
				<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H98D587BA6E9447EF8948A586D94BE1F7" style="OLC">
					<paragraph id="H46C3913C4AAE4ABA8C95AD76E813EBEF"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">except as otherwise provided in this
				section, not less than—</text>
						<subparagraph id="HA13CFD6302FE402E94B4439DB534DE00"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">$6.00 an hour, beginning on the 60th day
				after the date of enactment of the Minimum Wage Competitiveness Act of
				2006;</text>
						</subparagraph><subparagraph id="H72180A6CB95947B791ED21249455477B"><enum>(B)</enum><text>$6.75 an hour,
				beginning on the date that is 180 days after that 60th day; and</text>
						</subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC1661D2C8D27456DAFCC35C0CA60334B"><enum>(C)</enum><text>$7.15 an hour,
				beginning on the date that is 1 year after that 60th
				day;</text>
						</subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
			</subsection><subsection id="HAD7317F33E794EA2BAE1794313E6097E"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective
			 Date</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The amendment made by
			 subsection (a) shall take effect 60 days after the date of enactment of this
			 Act.</text>
			</subsection></section><section id="HE394BB2A874E47039DF60056F77E42D9"><enum>3.</enum><header>Applicability of
			 minimum wage to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands</header>
			<subsection id="HEE194A26D04F4020A62E605CE7F8EFD5"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
			 General</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 6 of the Fair
			 Labor Standards Act of 1938 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/29/206">29 U.S.C. 206</external-xref>) shall apply to the Commonwealth of
			 the Northern Mariana Islands.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="HD47CEF8FE1C54D0C8443CB1DA75BD8F1"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Transition</header><text>Notwithstanding
			 subsection (a), the minimum wage applicable to the Commonwealth of the Northern
			 Mariana Islands under section 6(a)(1) of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938
			 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/29/206">29 U.S.C. 206(a)(1)</external-xref>) shall be—</text>
				<paragraph id="H8AF3250051AB4F46B058B1E00610EBCA"><enum>(1)</enum><text>$3.55 an hour,
			 beginning on the 60th day after the date of enactment of this Act; and</text>
				</paragraph><paragraph id="H36DD5C45B5724BB285022FEB58E10D9"><enum>(2)</enum><text>increased by $0.50
			 an hour (or such lesser amount as may be necessary to equal the minimum wage
			 under section 6(a)(1) of such Act), beginning 6 months after the date of
			 enactment of this Act and every 6 months thereafter until the minimum wage
			 applicable to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands under this
			 subsection is equal to the minimum wage set forth in such section.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body>
