<official-title>To provide assistance for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland.</official-title>

<section id="H715AC7034D3847038612450136C13318" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Support for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews Act of 2006</short-title></quote>.</text></section> 
<section id="H27488DB6796B4CA29D5DCA541CDA3433"><enum>2.</enum><header>Findings</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Congress finds the following:</text> 
<paragraph id="H2F3EB73E5EBF4A73A176E4BEE5D79C81"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Current and future generations benefit greatly by visible reminders and documentation of the historical and cultural roots of their society.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H2A464421135B42209E20CEA154F8BD5"><enum>(2)</enum><text>It is in the national interest of the United States to encourage the preservation and protection of artifacts associated with the heritage of United States citizens who trace their forbearers to other countries and to encourage the collection and dissemination of knowledge about that heritage.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H936C747EBE144FAF999DB19933B4979D"><enum>(3)</enum><text>According to the 2000 United States Census, nearly 9,000,000 Americans are of Polish ancestry.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H217017CA651F41A69E82AC75EA00732C"><enum>(4)</enum><text>At the beginning of World War II, Poland had the largest Jewish population in Europe.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HC8363A702F0743F08F002B9742714983"><enum>(5)</enum><text>In 1996, Yeshayahu Weinberg, a founding director of Tel Aviv’s Diaspora Museum and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, created an international team of experts with the goal of establishing a Museum of the History of Polish Jews.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HBF79135A278A4963B23644E08FEAF43D"><enum>(6)</enum><text>The Museum of the History of Polish Jews will preserve and present the history of the Jewish people in Poland and the wealth of their culture spanning a period of one thousand years.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H5EB39750C1E74A73801DD2D66084A7D5"><enum>(7)</enum><text>In 1997, the City of Warsaw donated a parcel of land, opposite the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Memorial, for the explicit use for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H4E21CDEE0B184D3E9E46E85D4BEC7900"><enum>(8)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In 2005, the Government of Poland and the City of Warsaw agreed to provide 40,000,000 Polish zlotys for the construction of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H575EE9BAD18D43B68D008CF300B4FA91"><enum>(9)</enum><text>In 2005, an international architectural competition selected a Finnish firm to design the building for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.</text></paragraph> </section> 
<section id="H493531998030456E91C5A207C188A448"><enum>3.</enum><header>Assistance for the Museum of the History of Polish jews</header> 
<subsection id="HE61A4ED74850429A85C319933BE5B8BD"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Assistance provided by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State shall be made available to assist in the development of the permanent collection of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HFAB66A0128394248A63E887D64000386"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Authorization for assistance</header><text>To carry out the purposes of subsection (a), the Secretary of State is authorized to provide $5,000,000, which shall remain available until expended, to the Museum for the History of Polish Jews.</text></subsection></section>
