<section section-type="section-one" id="HEDEE3A1101E94DE0A1E4D381ABF4173C" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>1.</enum><header>Director of the Census</header> 
<subsection id="H85120542683B4E509BB39C2242C39556"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text><external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/13/21">Section 21</external-xref> of title 13, United States Code, is amended to read as follows:</text>

<section id="HD0D39DBBD03A4BF1843F73ED52512C09"><enum>21.</enum><header>Director of the Census: duties; term</header> 
<subsection id="H913C0A2D37804323971CE3DD2988B219"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>The Bureau shall be headed by a Director of the Census, appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Director shall perform such duties as may be imposed upon him by law, regulations, or orders of the Secretary, and shall report directly to the Secretary.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H743DA9C59D1F4FC9A59D636ED689C46D"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Term</header><text>The term of office of the Director shall be 5 years, and shall begin as of the date which occurs 2 years after the 2000 census day, and every fifth year after such date. Any individual appointed to fill a vacancy in such position, occurring before the expiration of the term for which his predecessor was appointed, shall be appointed for the remainder of such term. The Director may serve after the end of his term until reappointed or until a successor has been appointed, but in no event longer than 180 days.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H688054159AA54EBF94E8E4C00C553CC"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Definition</header><text>For purposes of this section, the term <term>census day</term> has the meaning given the term <term>decennial census date</term> under section 141(a). </text></subsection></section><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection> 
<subsection id="H115434AB257C4B18A8BB6694907EB100"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Transition provision</header><text>The individual serving as the Director of the Census on the day before the date of enactment of this Act may continue to serve in that position until such individual or a successor has been appointed (in accordance with the amendment made by subsection (a)) to serve for the remainder of the 5-year term within which such date of enactment occurs, but in no event longer than 180 days after such date of enactment.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HFA4E2F25A35E49528642BB606EF261D4"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Clerical amendment</header><text>The table of sections for <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/13/1">chapter 1</external-xref> of title 13, United States Code, is amended by striking the item relating to section 21 and inserting the following:</text>
