<official-title>To provide the Secretary of Education with waiver authority for students who are eligible for Pell Grants who are adversely affected by a natural disaster.</official-title>

<section id="H3B08705671334B808D57D53D1498C98" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Pell Grant Hurricane and Disaster Relief Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section> 
<section id="H582B8B34E2314935BD5B08BC951033D8" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Waivers of Pell Grant repayment by students affected by disasters</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 484B(b)(2) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1091b">20 U.S.C. 1091b(b)(2)</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following new subparagraph:</text> 
<quoted-block style="OLC" id="H45E0B5E0315A4E64B5F6A7A7F1642031" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<subparagraph id="H9372936260144E0D97F16D72FEEF4D1F"><enum>(D)</enum><header>Waivers of Pell Grant repayment by students affected by disasters</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary may waive the amounts that students are required to return under this section with respect to Pell grants if the withdrawals on which the returns are based are withdrawals—</text> 
<clause id="H365DE945D273406100F7D4EFA6291E2C"><enum>(i)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by students—</text> 
<subclause id="HBC49289982CA42009F37B55F26D5D6B3"><enum>(I)</enum><text>who were residing in, employed in, or attending an institution of higher education that is located in an area that is designated by the President to warrant major disaster assistance under section 401 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/5170">42 U.S.C. 5170</external-xref>); and</text></subclause> 
<subclause id="H9A30E5AEF86F48088DBEB98821196B45"><enum>(II)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">whose attendance was interrupted because of the impact of the disaster on the student or the institution; and</text></subclause></clause> 
<clause id="H3FBD443DA9D24FC7B4BB7900397BE843"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>that end within the academic year during which the designation occurred or during the next succeeding academic year.</text></clause></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block> </section>
