<official-title>To amend the Public Health Service Act to deem certain training in geriatric medicine or geriatric psychiatry to be obligated service for purposes of the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program, and for other purposes.</official-title>

<section id="H6EB395F689C6495B91B700289D348771" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline"> This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Geriatricians Loan Forgiveness Act of 2006</short-title></quote>.</text></section> 
<section id="H028C5B6C21D9464892473EC59D030532"><enum>2.</enum><header>National health service corps loan repayment program</header> 
<subsection id="H75328482E7FD40109B09EA4EEB0563CD"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Section 338B(g) of the Public Health Service Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/254l-1">42 U.S.C. 254l–1(g)</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text>

<paragraph id="HBC621126911A4137B0A9BB50D3B9B1FA"><enum>(5)</enum><header>Obligated service</header> 
<subparagraph id="H227C943A8C6B47E88099343DC5AFED2C"><enum>(A)</enum><header>In general</header><text>For purposes of this section, each year of training in geriatric medicine or geriatric psychiatry that is required in order to obtain a certificate of added qualification in geriatric medicine or geriatric psychiatry shall be deemed to be a year of obligated service. Upon the completion of such training, an individual with respect to whom a year of training is deemed to be a year of obligated service under this paragraph shall, after consultation with the Secretary, provide services in geriatric medicine or geriatric psychiatry as appropriate during the remainder of such individual’s period of obligated service.</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HB3A80EE53C26425C939733261FEEBDEF"><enum>(B)</enum><header>Limitation</header><text>The number of fellowship years in geriatric medicine or geriatric psychiatry that are deemed to be a year of obligated service under this paragraph shall not exceed 400 in any calendar year.</text></subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection> 
<subsection id="H2E443E1E9FD74C408064E36116A89F30"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header> 
<paragraph id="H4EB31AD224A74A8C8B524C2F48818BD8"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text>The amendment made by subsection (a) shall apply to applications submitted to the Secretary of Health and Human Services under section 338B of the Public Health Service Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/254l-1">42 U.S.C. 254l–1</external-xref>) on or after the date that is 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HF020C4FA84C84FC38E0696F38F4753FF"><enum>(2)</enum><header>First year of program</header><text>For the period beginning on the date that is 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act and ending on December 31 of the calendar year in which such period begins, the Secretary of Health and Human Services shall ratably reduce the maximum number of fellowship years in geriatric medicine or geriatric psychiatry that may be deemed to be a year of obligated service under section 338B(g)(5)(B) of the Public Health Service Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/254l-1">42 U.S.C. 254l–1(g)(5)(B)</external-xref>) (as added by subsection (a)) to reflect the portion of the year that the amendment made by subsection (a) is in effect.</text></paragraph></subsection></section>
