<official-title>To amend the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 to include nurse practitioners and domestic partners within the scope of coverage of the Act and to extend the period of family or medical leave for spouses employed by the same employer.</official-title>

<section id="HD8BCAEC2C3D14B9D9CB704DCF29000B8" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Family and Medical Leave Protection Act of 2005</short-title></quote>.</text></section> 
<section id="H4F6AB13882574DFFBA0091E42152C711"><enum>2.</enum><header>Amendments to Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993</header> 
<subsection id="H6FCA07544A8E4B4D84749CE00045D09"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Inclusion of nurse practitioner within definition of health care provider</header><text>Section 101(6) of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/29/2611">29 U.S.C. 2611(6)</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="H5F54EA23743546A800065CCB8F42B222"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in subparagraph (A), by striking <quote>or</quote> at the end;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H36CB24C325344FF996B9E63C25C99B99"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by redesignating subparagraph (B) as subparagraph (C); and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H9BDDEA209AB04DF589EC689737184B00"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by inserting after subparagraph (A) the following new subparagraph:</text> 
<quoted-block style="OLC" id="H641B70A8ED5B445AA5001436F99C74C4" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<subparagraph id="H0A83B4ACE11F4367AAA85FB7924EA387"><enum>(B)</enum><text>a nurse practitioner; or</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>;</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="HAB4EA0B595DC465191681F3981006149"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Inclusion of domestic partner within definition of spouse</header><text>Section 101(13) of such Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/29/2611">29 U.S.C. 2611(13)</external-xref>) is amended by inserting before the period at the end the following: <quote>and includes a domestic or civil partner registered or recognized under the applicable domestic or civil partnership State or local law</quote>.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H72B4DF64882E4175BDA1E4D1C308A5AB"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Extension of period of family or medical leave for spouses employed by same employer</header><text>Section 102(f) of such Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/29/2612">29 U.S.C. 2612(f)</external-xref>) is amended by striking <quote>12 workweeks</quote> and inserting <quote>24 workweeks</quote>.</text></subsection></section>
