<official-title>To expand the bases on which student loan borrowers may obtain deferments of their repayment obligations.</official-title>

<section id="H136F8F98E43B4C1D97F523AAFF59BF48" section-type="section-one" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Residents and Public Interest Attorneys Deferment Act</short-title></quote> .</text></section> 
<section id="H9D057292132345BE9504D3D554461755"><enum>2.</enum><header>Additional deferments</header> 
<subsection id="H73F7E7115D5446318D77D400F7C69D70"><enum>(a)</enum><header>FFEL and Direct loans</header><text>Section 428(b)(1)(M) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1078">20 U.S.C. 1078(b)(1)(M)</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="H0C834CDECA76485599C8C6FEF272D89D"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking <quote>or</quote> at the end of clause (ii); and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H3616E426CB984DFF91DB128573EA86C1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting after clause (iii) the following new clauses:</text> 
<quoted-block style="OLC" id="HF12A890ED98A421400373CEEC2BBE97F" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<clause id="H6409107F0F754F63879C00ADDFE13881"><enum>(iv)</enum><text>during any period in which the borrower is serving an internship, or a medical or dental residency, the successful completion of which is required in order to receive professional recognition required to begin professional practice or service; </text></clause> 
<clause id="H97AB806AD2674DCB9F88422CFA020672"><enum>(v)</enum><text>not in excess of 2 years during which the borrower is serving in a public service fellowship with any public entity, such as service under subtitle D of title I of the National and Community Service Act of 1990 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/12571">42 U.S.C. 12571 et seq.</external-xref>); or</text></clause> 
<clause id="HA8EFF5EECAEF469688929D65BE0067CB"><enum>(vi)</enum><text>not in excess of 2 years during which the borrower is employed full-time as a public defender or prosecutor;</text></clause><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="HA43F37FC7B694DEA87CDD500BD36D41F"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Perkins loans</header><text>Section 464(c)(2)(A) of such Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1087dd">20 U.S.C. 1087dd(c)(2)(A)</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="H182DC2A991884170889255B56DFECC00"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking <quote>or</quote> at the end of clause (iii);</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H13B82BCB48EE4C9B9C59A8684B070152"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by redesignating clause (iv) as clause (vii); and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H18C772E9F56E455197368533ADD46B85"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by inserting after clause (iii) the following new clauses:</text>

<clause id="H52A98D61A54146B0AE9C9EDAE9B279EE" indent="up2"><enum>(iv)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">during any period in which the borrower is serving an internship, or a medical or dental residency, the successful completion of which is required in order to receive professional recognition required to begin professional practice or service; </text></clause>
